Mr David Short

Melbourne Tutor

Mr David Short - St Kilda East, Melbourne

Mr David Short I have long experience and flexible approach that gets results. I work with people of all ages
and backgrounds with the goal of improving their language skills or starting a new language.

English:
I have been teaching English as a foreign language ever since I got my Trinity Cert. TESOL back in 1999. I have worked in various
language schools in Spain, Italy and Australia, as well as giving private lessons in many cities over the entire period. I have
experience preparing students for the IELTS examination for immigration purposes in Australia.

French:
I started studying French in school in 1990. I continued it at the University of Bradford (BA Modern Languages), and have since lived in
Paris and Bordeaux. When living in English-speaking countries, I always tutor in French privately. I have also worked on and off as a
freelance French translator since 2002. I have NAATI accreditation by testing as a "Paraprofessional French–English Interpreter" and
"Professional French-to-English Translator". I work as a French–English interpreter (on-site and by phone) for Centrelink and
VITS LanguageLink as well as (by phone) the New Zealand government.

Spanish:
I taught myself Spanish from a book in 1995. I sat a GCSE exam and got the highest possible grade (starred A); the first time I spoke the
language with another person was in the oral part of the exam. I continued Spanish at the University of Bradford (BA Modern Languages),
and have since lived in Saragossa (where I did a four-month intensive Spanish course, achieving a score of 9.5 out of 10 in the "superior"
stream) and Valencia. When living in English-speaking countries, I always tutor in Spanish privately. I hold the International House
Barcelona certificate in teaching Spanish as a foreign language, validated by the University of Barcelona. I have also worked on and off as
a freelance Spanish translator since 2002. I have NAATI accreditation by testing as a "Professional Spanish–English Interpreter" and
"Professional Spanish-to-English Translator" I work as a Spanish–English interpreter (on-site and by phone) for VITS LanguageLink as
well as (by phone) the New Zealand government.

Italian:
I taught myself Italian from a book in 1994. I sat a GCSE exam and achieved an A. I left Italian to concentrate on French and Spanish at
university, but went to teach English in Milan straight after graduation. After a few months, I started working as the press translator for
Coca-Cola Italy, for one year. Since then, I have done occasional translation work in Italian, and taught Italian privately.

Latin:
I taught myself Latin from a book in 2004. I have no formal qualifications in it, but I am able to transfer my skills in modern languages to this
ancient one. I have a unique approach whereby I bring the language alive by working orally. I have been tutoring in Latin privately for the
past two years. My Latin students are highschoolers, whereas the majority of my other students are adults. I am regularly contacted by
people for short translations of mottos and suchlike.
