Hi my name is David and I am an Engineering graduate from the Western Australian School of Mines. I also undertook a postgraduate Masters degree at The University of Western Australia. As part of my Engineering work placement, in 2007-2008, I worked on a couple of underground mines during my time for a contractor to: Western Areas nickel mine in Forrestania (summer internship) and Northern Star Resources Paulsens gold mine in Pannawonica (winter vacation period). After spending time in the mines, I then decided to set up my own tutoring business. Tutoring is my passion, I am constantly refining my tutoring skills and approaches and have full confidence that I can drive all students to achieve their academic goals. I have taught university, secondary and primary students. As a side, I go from a variety of textbooks and past exam papers and will go an extra mile to get you better questions with worked out solutions if needed as well. My teaching style is warm and relaxed, without being overly casual. I believe in a positive learning environment, with a focus on staying "on topic".
Since 2014, high schools in NSW that I have regularly tutored Preliminary and HSC (High School Certificate) Year 11 and 12 subjects have come from: De La Salle College Ashfield, The Scots College, Knox Grammar School, International Grammar School, Newington College, Trinity Grammar School, Conservatorium High School, St Andrew's Cathedral School, Tempe High School, Beverly Hills Girls High School, Malek Fahd School, Sydney Secondary College, Casimir Catholic College and Canterbury Girls High School. (All references available) I am also doing further tutoring with middle years and intermediate years from Years 7-10 students in preparation for HSC and senior years, those students are studying at: Willoughby Girls High School, Sydney Grammar School, MLC School and Marist College Kogarah. Junior primary schools that I have tutored in preparation for upper high school: Artarmon Public School, Cranbrook School, St Patrick's Primary Parramatta and Macquarie Fields Public School. I have my own physical copies of the main maths textbooks used in New South Wales from Years 7 - Years 10: Cambridge, Oxford, New Century, Australian SignPost New South Wales, Connections and Pearson Mathematics. For primary mathematics, I offer acceleration learning with my Singapore Asia Publishers (SAP) books from Years 1-6. (I have a preference to tutor kids from Year 4 or above) For primary students, it is important to hone their problem-solving skills and develop creative and critical thinking skills. If there is a resource that a student uses that I don't have, I make the effort to go out and buy the book to make sure I keep up to pace with the students school content.
My IB Diploma tutoring experience has been working for a couple of Presbyterian Ladies' College students from Great Britain (Peppermint Grove, WA) in 2013 and a student from Newington College in Maths SL (Standard Level) from 2016-2017. My group tutoring experience (have conducted 2 group sessions in total) of Maths SL have been to students from Kambala School. My SL students were able to score high bands for the respective IB maths subjects. ( I still have references available) As well as this, I previously taught a St Andrews Cathedral school student in Mathematical Studies. I have access to all solutions to Maths HL, Maths SL, Maths Options textbooks (and own physical copies of Haese Mathematics, Cambridge University Press and Oxford University Press textbooks) in which I am happy to explain step-by-step answers. I can one-by-one break down specifically what a Band 3,4,5,6 and 7 type as well as break down the question and answer into simpler terms for my current IB students. It's important a student knows what kind of question they are answering and the specific level of difficulty associated to it. Using this resource has helped me to pass on shortcuts, tips, tricks and save time for my students in senior years especially with such busy Year 11 and 12 commitments. I'm aware of the high expectations and have the resources, knowledge and experience to cover Band 7's in IB subjects and Band 6/E4's in HSC. Currently, I am taking intakes for the 2017 HSC & IB year.
With regards to my statistics tutoring around NSW universities, I have kept the majority of the exam papers, online quizzes, weekly tutorials and workshop solutions from the students that I have worked with in the past. My written thesis was a statistical and quantitative report on the S&P/ASX 200 index against gold price fluctuations titled, "Correlation between gold price movement relative to share price movements of Australian Stock Exchange companies" which obtained a Distinction Grade in my final year of university and studying the mathematics and statistics part of my Engineering degree was what I enjoyed the most as part of my degree. Since graduation, I have developed further interest in equity markets and follow the share market prices and financial markets through the Australian Financial Review, Yahoo Finance and The Australian. I can perform the majority of statistical calculations/hypothesis tests/charts using Microsoft Excel and R Studio programming language. I can also tutor calculus from a high school level up until 1st year university level. In 2017, I currently tutor a student MATH1011 at Sydney University.
I am able to help primary and upper high school students in all areas of English including: reading, spelling, phonics and listening. I am also familiar with the different writing styles for high school: narrative, persuasive and recount writing. I also have access to: Scholarship/Opportunity Class tests, NAPLAN, ICAS test materials which I have used to tutor past primary students and middle high school students with. I have also sat the IELTS exam a couple of times in the past, the first time as a test to gain entrance into university and the second time for work purposes and obtained bands of 8.5 and 9.0 for the speaking section respectively and believe that having a tutor who can communicate with a student is imperative for success. I have still kept my IELTS resources which may be of help to students in helping to better understand the structure of this exam.
