Dr. Tammy Humphrey - Carlingford, Sydney
I am a qualified teacher with a PhD in physics who offers tuition in Preliminary and HSC physics as well as maths (years 7 to 12) at my home in Carlingford. Please visit my website, www.mathscience.com.au for more comprehensive information.
My aims in tuition are two-fold:
- To assist students to achieve their personal best in their physics and/or maths results.
- To increase students' confidence in class and their enjoyment of maths and physics.
I believe my role as a teacher and tutor is to present maths and physics to students with genuine enthusiasm and as a unified, coherent whole; making connections between individual topics as far as time and syllabus constraints permit. This offers the opportunity for students to understand the material and so enjoy their maths and physics, rather than simply having to commit isolated and apparently unconnected facts to memory, a process which offers little enjoyment or long term benefit.
Completion of HSC past paper questions is an integral part of the tuition I provide to all year 12 maths and physics students and I utilise practical demonstrations and 'hands-on' work whenever feasible (e.g. for the 'Motors and Generators' topic in year 12). I cater for high achieving students by providing harder question sets and my own notes for the core physics topics.
For my younger maths students I provide extension work or assistance with their current school work.
Please note that I am now full until the end of the 2011 HSC, and only have wait-list places available for 2012 tuition.
You can contact me via direct email to tammy@mathscience.com.au (this is the easiest way to contact me) or by phoning outside my tutoring hours, i.e. weekdays until 4:30pm, Saturday afternoons or Sundays. Please note that during the day I look after my two young sons so am not always able to answer the phone, but if you leave a message I will get back to you as soon as I can.
Experience Before tutoring students from my home, I worked for several years as a physicist in Australia, the U.S. and Europe (for more info, see my professional website: www.humphrey.id.au). In 1997, during my undergraduate studies at UNSW I was the physics tutor at New College.
Qualifications I am a qualified secondary teacher (Grad Dip Ed from Macquarie University, 2007/8) and have a PhD and a 1st class honours degree in physics from the University of New South Wales.
