Miss Erica Lovell - Gosford, Sydney
When I teach Primary and High School English, Contemporary Singing and Drama, I approach all
my students, regardless of subject area or skill, individually. I believe that every student needs to
feel that thier particular needs are being listened to and addressed. I am passionate about self
expression and fostering a student's creativity and lateral thinking alongside development of sound
technique and theoretical knowledge.
I am willing to do home visits for English tuition. Singing lessons need to be taken at Wyoming. I am
happy to discuss lesson times if Fridays and Saturdays do not suit you.
Lesson Structure:
Singing:
I always check in with what my students are doing vocally at the beginning of the lesson, so that I
can structure the warm up and excercises according to thier current vocal demands, e.g. school
assessments, community theatre etc. We then do a thorough warm up and technical exercise
session, this takes up about one third of the lesson. We then move on to repertoir and the
fundamentals of learning the piece, this is the second third of the lesson. The last third is about
working with the piece performatively, i.e. the dramatic considerations. I am very focussed on
developing singers as performers who tell moving stories, not just technical machines who sing
well, although solid technique is absolutely vital to strong, safe performance.
This year I successfully guided my first Year 12 Music student. She scored 91% for music and
was offered a place at the Australian Institute of Music to study Music Theatre.
Primary School English:
At this level lessons must be very specifically tailored to the students needs. As a general rule,
lessons are divided into three main sections:
1. Review of last weeks home work. What was challenging? What was easy?
2. Any drills or quick tests, i.e. spelling tests or flash cards.
3. Working in class on either upcoming school assignments or work sheets.
Junior High School:
Students in the early years of high school benefit from a mix of set worksheets and open
discussion.
Senior High School English:
I approach Senior High School tuition much like University Tutorials. I believe at this level students
benefit most from discussion. Generally I then set home work which will form the basis of
discussion the following week. The process is quite organic and many students find this very
rewarding and beneficial.
Experience I have been tutoring English since 2003 both privately and through tutoring agencies.
I began teaching singing privately in 2004 and through a studio in 2006.
