Melbourne Tutor in Guitar
I'm Neil from Mitcham Guitar Tuition. I have been playing the guitar for 25 years and teaching for 12 years. I completed a Bachelor of Music at NMIT in 2004 where I studied jazz and contemporary guitar. Since then I have taught the guitar in high schools, primary schools, for various after hours music academies and from client's homes. Since purchasing my own home in Mitcham I have also been teaching from my own person teaching studio.
Every student is different and every person requires a different approach. To truly engage a pupil a teacher must cultivate enthusiasm within the student. Communication at the outset is vital in defining goals. Studying for an AMEB exam may be a perfect way to motivate one student whilst another may be tempted by the social element of joining a rock band with their friends. Mature aged students may feel too embarrassed to simply ask to learn some of their favorite songs thinking they have to learn how to read traditional music notation first, which may not be the case. My goal is to teach my students what is best for them. All it takes is effective communication.
Lessons can be 30, 45 or 60 minutes long. The lessons may be conducted at my personal teaching studio in Mitcham or for a $10 fee I will come to the surrounding suburbs.

I have 12 years experience teaching privately and in groups. I would strongly
suggest private lessons unless you think shared lessons will cultivate enthusiasm for
I have prepared students for VCE and AMEB exams. Students preparing for these
exams must be proficient at reading traditional music notation.
I also teach via chord charts and tablature. This is a method which does not require
learning how to read traditional music notation. Tablature can often be the best
solution for a stubborn student or a mature aged student who will not be able to find
several hours each week to practice. In fact the majority of guitar students in the
21st century learn via tablature. It does have a stigma attached to it however most
hobbyists prefer tablature. Contact me to discuss which method you wish to pursue.
