Sydney tutor in Algebra, Calculus, Further Maths, Geometry, Maths, Maths Methods, Statistics

Whether you're thriving, bored, or behind, I can help you push your mathematics to the next level. I am an experienced academic coach with a passion for what I do. My lessons aim to make you a better learner with a focus on building sustainable and smart study habits and skills, as well as mathematical reasoning, rigour, and intuition: I am confident that I can help you achieve your mathematical goals, whatever they may be.

---Who am I?---

Hi! I'm Angus, basically I'm a massive maths nerd. On this rock floating in space it's up to all of us to bring meaning to our lives. For me, learning is how I derive my meaning, and one of the ways I pursue that meaning is through teaching. I'm just about as passionate about teaching maths as I am about the subject itself. So yeah, big nerd, love teaching, you should choose me to help you excel at (or survive) my subject, sorry for getting all poetic there.

So why should you trust me with your mathematical education? Fair question: I'm an experienced tutor (5+ years), with a Ba. Science (Advanced mathematics) from the University of Sydney, and I'm undertaking studies for an Honours degree in mathematics so I'm still immersed in the subject. I'm a HD average student, with a passion for mathematics, and mathematics education. In my HSC I attained an ATAR of 98.45 with E4s in both extension 1 and extension 2 mathematics (band 6 equivalent). More importantly I get results: I have helped students bridge from little or no maths background to university courses in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths), I have taught foundational maths to students who fell well behind, and helped accelerate strong students towards their academic goals.

---Who are you?---

Who am I looking to teach? In particular I'm interested in taking on students who are ready to take their studies seriously, generally individuals in their last years of high school or early years of university will be a good fit for my preferred modus operandi, I have no expectation of competence but I will expect and encourage you to work smart, hard, and healthily. You don't have to love maths either, but I will try to win you over :P

---Modus Operandi---

So what do I do? I work with my students on a weekly basis at my house in Newport. My lessons are generally pencilled in for an hour but I often go over time (at no extra expense, I just get carried away sometimes). I encourage my students to communicate with me throughout out the week, this helps keep them on track and gives me a clearer picture of what they're struggling with, I also frequently put in extra time throughout the week to help with problems, basically because I'm a giant nerd and I care a lot about my students.

Depending on the needs of my student my classes will take one shape or another: I usually spend most of my time going over problems they've struggled with throughout the week, I also give some significant time to discovery (teaching new content), patching (identifying and repairing holes in knowledge, skills), study skills and scheduling, and miscellaneous rants pertaining to whatever random thing happened to distract me (they're good rants I promise).

I put a focus on work ethic, learning skills, and health in my teaching. One of the most valuable skills I can teach is healthy and effective study techniques and habits, this is an integral part of my role as a coach. I keep tabs on the general wellness and happiness of my students and firmly believe in healthy, as well as hard, and smart work. This is one of the things that I believe separates my offering from basic tutoring.

I also take an uncommon philosophical stance on maths education in particular. I have a firm belief that there are very few mathematical concepts beyond the average person's grasp. As such I make a point of providing intuition and proof for nearly everything I teach, I can take nearly all content of all of the HSC mathematics courses all the way back to geometry if necessary. I don't just bombard you with proofs though, I make a judgement call and if I don't think you're ready for the full rigorous glory of a particular concept I'll just provide some intuition and tell you to practice.

---What to do now?---

Get in contact with me to work out a time for your first lesson, and get yourself on the path to achieving your goals! I have limited slots available, so get in fast!

I've taught my subject in a myriad of contexts to a wide variety of students: primary age kids, high-schoolers, young adults tackling their HSC, university students (young and mature aged), and even a prop maker looking to sure up her basic maths skills.

Though my preferred teaching arrangement is one-on-one coaching, I have experience teaching in a group context, in a class room, and as an online educator producing educational videos for students.
