I am an experienced and qualified teacher with a First class Hons degree in English. I have a detailed understanding of the National Curriculum up to and including Year 12 and have experience of teaching across a wide range of examination boards.
As a dedicated tutor, I am passionate about my subject and I dedicate a lot of time to supporting students, making sure concepts are easy to understand and that effective learning is taking place. I do this through the use of my own dynamic resources and consistent feedback of information to pupils.
I also provide tuition for students who need help writing personal statements for schools/universities.
I am a warm and friendly person who really enjoys working with pupils over a wide range of abilities. I believe students should not be limited, but encouraged to aim high and surpass their own expectations of themselves.
Previous Student Reviews
From Tracey (5/5): Very glad we found Claire!
From Sian (5/5): Claire helped my son to improve his English Lit grade. She is friendly, professional and always well prepared for lessons. Claire set homework tasks and helped with knowledge of the subject and exam technique. She has given excellent feedback to both my son and myself and improved his confidence before the exam.
From Liz (5/5): Claire is helping my daughter who is studying an English Language and Literature course. Claire works well with her to pose questions and enable her to gain insights into the texts and the requirements of assignment and exam work. Claire is professional and sets home work to ensure that appropriate feedback can be given when work is undertaken independently.
From Catherine (5/5):
I was delighted with Claire Henley’s tutoring. I hired a tutor to help me with GCSE English after a long break from education. I had failed almost all of my exams whilst at school and had been, frankly, an appalling student. I had previously only managed to achieve U and G grades in the subject, being unable to write more than my name in exam conditions and feeling completely overwhelmed.
Claire changed all that. She perfectly understood my needs as a student, and devised a sensible plan of action to best address my issues. She demystified exams for me; explaining exactly what the questions meant and what the exam board wanted to see, as well as how to achieve it in my answers. The pacing of the sessions was spot-on; starting off slowly to build my confidence, and gradually increasing the challenge until I was working at a speed and level beyond that required by the course, which made undertaking the actual exam an almost automatic process, and far less daunting than in the past.
Claire was highly professional; very well prepared; included past papers, relevant tasks of her own making, and all of the course materials for my particular qualification. Claire’s high level of organisation meant that no time was wasted on figuring out where to pick up from last week, and she made the best use of every available minute. I was always given immediate feedback on my work, along with tips to improve, so I always knew where I was and what I needed to do.
Claire was a pleasure to work with; personable, approachable and very patient. She made the undeniably dry business of exam prep fun and engaging. I had been worried that seeing a tutor in my elderly state of 35 would be a little embarrassing, but she never made me feel that way; instead she seemed genuinely enthusiastic about sharing her superb subject knowledge and passion for English.
I eventually overcame my nerves and ‘mental block’ with exams, and was thrilled to achieve an A* in the course, which was due in no small part to Claire’s invaluable instruction and guidance. I consider the sessions with Claire to be excellent value for money and the best investment in myself I have ever made; they have provided me with transferable and life-long skills, and the confidence to continue with my education and tackle subjects at a higher level.
To sum up, Claire Henley is an outstanding tutor; I have no hesitation in recommending her very highly indeed.
From Natalie (5/5) : When I set out to find a tutor for my daughter I was overwhelmed from the choice but I decided to go with Claire following her informative quick response emails and I am so pleased I did! I have been impressed at the difference the sessions have made and how much effort Claire puts in to make each session fun, structured and informative. I also get clear feedback so I know what is being covered in each session. Thank you Claire!
From Noriko (5/5):
Claire was a fantastic tutor for my daughter. She taught all the skills needed for GCSE and helped so much for her confidence. Highly recommended.
From Victor (5/5):
Claire has been truly excellent for our daughter who is preparing for entrance exams for three private schools. Our daughter positively looks forward to the sessions and is always very enthusiastic after she has finished. I have no hesitation at all in recommending Claire.
I have previously taught English for three years in an "Outstanding" rated secondary school in England.
I have been tutoring face to face as well as tutoring online for four years now in NSW and I am really happy to be a part of something that benefits those students who, for whatever reason, cannot come to a traditional classroom setting.
