THE THREE CORE TEXT TYPES

Every Clever Fox student develops genuine mastery of Narrative, Persuasive, and Informative writing — the three text types that underpin every major exam. Once students master the core, those skills transfer directly to every related format they encounter:

— A diary entry draws on narrative craft
— A speech draws on persuasive technique
— A newspaper article blends informative and persuasive elements

Students don't memorise rigid formulas. They internalise the principles that work across any writing task an examiner can set.

THE THREE-TIER DEVELOPMENTAL PROGRAM

Every student is met exactly where they are — and guided purposefully toward where they need to be.

Tier 1 — Scaffolded Writing
Students work from fully developed Clever Fox plans and modelled exemplars. The structure does the heavy lifting while students build confidence, absorb vocabulary, and develop their writing instincts. Nobody starts from a blank page.

Tier 2 — Guided Writing
Students use the Clever Fox plan as a springboard but write their own original texts. Independence is growing. Students begin finding their own voice and making deliberate, considered language choices.

Tier 3 — Independent Writing
Students write their own plans and texts entirely from scratch. Modelled exemplars inspire rather than direct. Writing at this stage is genuinely original and sophisticated — the kind that earns top-band marks and stands out to examiners.

Every student progresses through these tiers at their own pace, guided by Amber's examiner-informed eye on every piece of writing submitted.

THE TERM STRUCTURE — 10 WEEKS

Weeks 1–6 — Persuasive Essay and Narrative (deep mastery of the two most heavily weighted text types)
Weeks 7 — Narrative and Newspaper Article
Week 8 — Diary Entry and Advice Sheet
Week 9 — Email, Letter, Speech, and Information Report
Week 10 — Persuasive Essay and Narrative (consolidation)

By the end of each term, students have practised every text type they are likely to encounter in any high-stakes exam.

THE STEP-BY-STEP APPROACH

1. Initial Writing Assessment
Every new student completes two diagnostic writing tasks — one narrative, one persuasive — personally marked by Amber against the official NAPLAN rubric. Each assessment includes a rubric score, annotated script, and two pages of detailed written feedback. This provides a precise profile of current ability and a clear roadmap for development.
Assessment fee: $100 inc GST — payable once at enrolment.

2. Structured Weekly Lessons
Each two-hour class delivers explicit modelling of high-quality writing, covering structured paragraph frameworks, persuasive devices, advanced vocabulary, grammar, and figurative language. Lessons combine modelled instruction, guided practice, and independent application.

3. Handcrafted Resources
Co-authored with Graham Sims, every Clever Fox resource is purpose-built for high-stakes exam preparation:
— 100+ page Student Booklet per term — structured lessons, modelled examples, vocabulary lists, and practice tasks
— 150+ page Parent Support Booklet — insider tips, supplementary exercises, and home support guidance
— 250+ pages of structured teaching material per term, calibrated to lift both scores and confidence

This is not generic worksheet content. Every resource reflects years of examiner-level expertise.

4. Weekly Homework
Weekly tasks consolidate classroom learning through deliberate practice, calibrated to extend each student's current writing edge. Homework is where the week's lesson becomes embedded skill.

EXAMINER-INFORMED MARKING

Every piece of writing is assessed against the official NAPLAN marking rubric — the same framework used by national examiners. For selective, ICAS, and scholarship exams, the broad rubric headings are publicly available, but the specific scoring criteria within each band are not. This is where Amber's direct examiner experience matters most. Her feedback reflects what examiners actually look for within each category — the specific techniques, structural choices, and stylistic markers that separate a top-band script from a mid-band one.

Your child won't be told their writing is "good" or "needs improvement." They will receive precise, criteria-based feedback calibrated to the exact framework used in the exams they're preparing for.

When I was first introduced to Clever Fox, I was honestly sceptical about online classes. My daughter had never taken a writing class before, and the selective exams were just around the corner. My son, Leon, is a gifted mathematician and chess player and was chosen to participate in a class for gifted learners in Year 3. * All mainstream students receiving maths tuition scored in the top band for NAPLAN and achieved Credits, Distinctions or High Distinctions in ICAS.

* All students with learning difficulties receiving writing, reading comprehension and maths tuition progressed 2.5 times the state average in NAPLAN moving up several bands from Years 3 to 5 and also made great improvement in ICAS.
