Miss Gaia Charan

 Eastern Victoria - Clayton

Enthusiastic VCE and UCAT tutor / 99.85 ATAR / 99th percentile UCAT

Eastern Victoria tutor in UCAT, Biology, English Literature, Maths Methods

Hi everyone! My name is Gaia and I graduated from Melbourne Girls Grammar in 2019 with a 99.85 ATAR and a 99th percentile UCAT score, and am now going into my second year of undergraduate Medicine at Monash University. Since graduating high school, I have extensively tutored and lectured both VCE and the UCAT, and have loved having the opportunity to work with Year 11 and 12 students to gain deeper insight into subject content, as well as exam preparation, and test-taking skills.

I offer both individual and group tuition. I mostly tutor in libraries near Monash University and surrounding the Malvern area, as well as online via Zoom. I am flexible with meeting times and locations, and am more than happy to discuss this further!

My main goal for every subject I tutor is to ensure my teaching tailors to the needs of my students. As such, I aim to foster a dynamic where students are encouraged to openly speak about their questions and concerns regarding their subjects, university pathway, or the year as a whole, which can inevitably be quite stressful and demanding. Ultimately, the purpose of tutoring is to act as a form of support, while simultaneously encouraging and challenging students to present the strongest version of themselves on exam day. Through a holistic and adaptable approach to every subject, my sessions enable each student to do just that.

More subject-specific information:

UCAT (3230/ 99th percentile - 2019)
As the UCAT was new to Australia in 2019, I had to figure out myself the tricks that let you balance efficiency and accuracy during the test, and also have an insight into which resources are most relevant to the questions you will actually get on the day. Although the UCAT can seem difficult to prepare for, I have found that there are definitely ways to improve way beyond what you think is your natural ability, particularly by understanding the significance of each section of the UCAT to medicine.
Through tutoring and my own preparation, I have developed a significant number of strategies for tackling every question type in all 5 subtests, ensuring that you are ready for everything that comes your way on test day.
Feel free to also have a look at my Candidate Advice on the UCAT website here (my given name is Bahaar): https://www.ucat.edu.au/ucat-anz/practice-tests/candidate-advice/

BIOLOGY (raw 49 - 2018)
Biology was a subject I loved during high school, and a topic that I continue to learn more about through studying Medicine at university. I also qualified and competed at the International Biology Olympiad during Year 12, which gave me a much deeper understanding into a really wide scope of biology content. Finding ways to make the topics interesting to the student is a key part of biology - a subject with such a high volume of content. Figuring out what the assessors are looking for in responses is also crucial to maximising your marks, and is a skill I focus on developing in my sessions.

MATHS METHODS (raw 48 - 2018)
Methods, and maths in general, is all about practice and consistency. As well as establishing a solid foundation in the core topics by figuring out which methods of learning and working out work best for the individual student, I aim to encourage the study habits and skills that maximise marks in SAC and exam situations.
As a prerequisite for many university courses, Methods is taken by a wide range of students, and my teaching is flexible and responsive to the expectations, strengths, and weaknesses of each individual student.

LITERATURE (raw 47 - 2019)
Literature was my favourite subject through high school, and I love sharing my enthusiasm for it with other Lit students. Though you are afforded a lot of freedom in Literature, there are definitely key skills in writing and expression that best help you do justice to your ideas in essays. I offer sessions to work on the key aspects of close analysis and literary perspectives, expressive skills, and brainstorm/ develop ideas for texts and the creative SAC. I also provide detailed feedback on essays, and strongly believe that getting multiple perspectives on your writing is the best way to improve.
