Mr Gary Dexter

Online tutor in Creative Writing, Japanese

(1 student review)

If you're thinking of writing a novel, you might benefit by talking to someone who has gone through the whole process three times: from first inkling to first draft, from manuscript revision to finding an agent, and from finding a traditional publisher (and getting an advance) to promoting the finished product on TV and radio. You can see my books here: (clickable link in contact section below).

I enjoy teaching and seeing students' work develop, and I hope that I am always patient and encouraging. I specialize in novel-writing, but can also tutor in other areas of creative writing.

In Japanese, I hold the JLPT N3 qualification (please see below for details), so I can teach up to this level.

I am new to this site so haven't had many reviews yet, but but here are a couple of reviews from previous students:

'He is knowledgeable and friendly... I would highly recommend him to anyone.' - Dominick Allen.

'Gary knows his stuff! He takes a lot of care looking through your work and offers thoughtful and very useful suggestions.' - Yasmin

I have worked in various fields as a teacher, writer and illustrator. My novels can be seen (with reviews) on my website, and I have drawn a regular cartoon strip for the Spectator magazine.
I have worked as a teacher in Turkey, Oxford, London and Tokyo, both in a classroom setting and one-to-one. In recent years I have worked mainly online and have numerous references available to view. I have lived in Japan since 2021 and hold the JLPT N3 exam, so I can teach Japanese up to this level.
Tokyo is behind Canberra by one hour.

I have a Masters degree (MPhil) in Modern Poetry. I have been involved in English language and literature throughout my career, and have published both fiction and non-fiction books. I have written as a national columnist in the UK for the Guardian, The Times, the Sunday Telegraph and the Spectator. My book '102 Ways to Write a Novel' (under the name Alex Quick) can be seen on Amazon, as can my other books.

In terms of Japanese tuition, I passed the JLPT N3 in 2019.
The JLPT N3 is the upper-intermediate level exam that requires an understanding of approximately 3, 750 Japanese vocabulary words and the ability to understand and follow along with everyday conversations. Passing the JLPT N3 shows you have a respectable understanding of the Japanese language.
The level N3 test requires:
The ability to read and comprehend more difficult texts.
The ability to follow along in basic, everyday conversations spoken at a natural speed.

"Gary’s help has been invaluable to my writing process. He has a hawk eye for the technical stuff - punctuation, slips in POV, the rhythm of sentences, etc. and his suggestions and insights have challenged and inspired me. With his guidance I’ve become a better writer; more confident and able to do what I want to do with words and much clearer about what it is I want to write."
