Helping students reach their ATAR, GPA, and GAMSAT potential
Melbourne tutor in General Science, Psychology, GAMSAT, Medical Interviews, Essay Writing, Economics, Creative Writing, Philosophy, History, Politics
Hi there!
My name is Joe and I would like to work with you to achieve your academic ambitions.
I'm a current medical student at the University of Melbourne and St Vincent's hospital. Right now in the era of COVID-19 it is a crazy time to be studying, so I understand a few of you might need some extra help. I hope I can provide some valuable guidance.
When I was in high school (Brisbane State High School) my strengths were the humanities, receiving an ATAR 99.50 and the highest possible marks in both Philosophy & Reason and Modern History. University, however, took me in a different direction. I ended up studying economics, psychology, politics, history, and philosophy -- making the Dean's Honours List twice -- before switching to science and committing to medicine as a postgraduate pathway at the end of 2018. However, having not studied biology or physics past year 9 at school, I was left to my own devices to learn the science from scratch in order to tackle the GAMSAT.
To complicate matters further, I had already committed to 3 months backpacking in Europe over the 2018-19 summer and an exchange semester at the University of Amsterdam for the first half of 2019. Once I'd finished my exams in November 2018, I cracked into the GAMSAT prep and as I backpacked from December to February I slowly, laboriously, and sometimes very painfully used my spare time in hostels to teach myself the fundamental sciences online (grateful shout out to the Khan Academy). In March 2019, I flew from my student accommodation in Amsterdam to Liverpool, England (the only available test centre in the Northern Hemisphere) to sit the March 2019 GAMSAT and somehow got out alive with a 76 overall.
I'm telling you all this simply to say that I believe that no matter how insurmountable you might think the obstacles are and how little you think you know right now, there's always a way forward with enough dedication, proper guidance, and naturally a generous serving of luck. I didn't have the money for tutoring when I was trying to get into med school, but I know I would have loved a bit more help along the way. Fortunately, that's what I can offer you. I tutor psychology, philosophy, history, economics, health sciences (biology, anatomy, biochem), essay writing, and creative writing at both a secondary and university level. I also tutor students preparing for the GAMSAT and medical school interviews.
My teaching philosophy places the individual student at the centre; we all learn in different ways and I strongly believe that a failure to learn can be traced back to a failure of the teacher to understand the student. I do my best to appreciate how each student best absorbs information and modify my delivery of the content accordingly. I also believe in a relaxed and engaging teaching environment -- one with high standards for both tutor and student, but definitely not one to dread. If you're finding studying a constant and painful grind, you might not be going about it in the most effective way. Contrary to popular opinion, studying can be something to look forward to!
Please reach out on 0421497569 if you'd like to team up or just ask a few more questions. I look forward to hearing from you.
I have tutored primary, secondary, and tertiary students in a wide range of subjects, chiefly specialising in humanities, health sciences, and medical school admissions. Typically I have tutored one-to-one but also have experience in a group setting.
I have also previously been employed by GradReady as a GAMSAT content creator.
