VCE YEAR 12 SPECIALIST ENGLISH TUTOR

---- "I would just like to thank you for the exceptional support, advice and guidance you have provided to my son leading up to his final English exam." (Email note from current 2018 parent Andrew) ----

I provide one-on-one tutoring to YEAR 12 VCE ENGLISH and VCE LITERATURE students, from various private and public Melbourne and regional schools, including select entry schools and those students studying via Distance Education.

My past VCE students have consistently gained impressive study score results, both exceeding initial personal expectations and helping to facilitate ATAR scores for entrance into their preferred university courses.

The weekly private tutoring I provide helps VCE students to read and understand the various literary and other texts under study, assisting them to find their own voices in the analytic, persuasive (both written and oral), literary and creative writing required, for both the SACs and the final exam.

The organisation of private lessons is individualised, based directly on each student's specific needs, following the VCE class curriculum as laid out by the student’s school, SAC due dates, practice, official trial and final exams.

My approach to year 12 English studies aims not only to take into account present challenges or difficulties, but also to build on each student's academic and personal strengths, increasing confidence as well as skill over the course of the year.

As a highly qualified and experienced tutor, I have a comprehensive understanding of the present VCE English and Literature courses and their requirements. By maintaining a detailed knowledge of the VCE literary texts, including secondary support materials produced by VATE (Victorian Association of Teachers of English), I am able to engage students in ways that radically improve their understanding and extend their written work.

My graduate study in the humanities was completed at Harvard University (Cambridge, Mass.) and at Columbia University (New York). I have a PhD in English Literature and broad experience teaching writing and literature to students of all ages and of all ability and confidence levels.

I am widely experienced and enjoy working with a range of student abilities, from students who excel at written work, yet need to take their marks higher to meet elite course admission scores, to those students who are struggling to meet minimum English requirements, including those who suffer distress and anxiety about essay writing, especially under SAC and exam conditions.

During the 2019 academic year, I will be offering weekly tuition via Skype video calling (only). From my extensive experience over the past 4 years tutoring both in-person and online VCE English students, I have found that online tuition yields exactly the same positive outcomes as face-to-face tuition, but with a range of additional benefits for students. I tutor students who do Skype sessions from both school - in the library, during free periods or immediately after school - and from home, on weekday afternoons/evening and weekends.

Without the extra burden of travel time associated with in-person tuition away from home, students are able to conserve one of their most valuable resources in year 12: time. Skype sessions mean extra time for students (and parents), not just for study, but also for rest, exercise and relaxation. Skype sessions also allow students with significant extra curricular (music, sport, etc) commitments and school leadership responsibilities the time to simultaneously pursue their academic goals. The exchange of essays and feedback works in exactly the same way for online tutoring sessions as in-person sessions, and this is the same regardless of whether student practice essays are typed or handwritten.

(For prospective students who find they have compromised video calling quality, there are a range of ways to improve it, which I am happy to facilitate.)

Please INQUIRE about year 12 English 3/4 tutoring places for 2019.

(Note: there are no remaining 2019 places for 3/4 Literature, though I am taking a wait list, and I am not presently offering tuition in 3/4 English Language.)

* NEW 2019 STUDENT/PARENT CONSULTATIONS: I will be available through to the third week in December to meet with new students/parents for a (free of charge) Skype meeting to discuss potential tutoring needs and strategies. Please email to set up a time.

All inquiries welcome and all emails answered promptly. Thank you!
