Graduated high school in 2017 with top marks in IB English Literature. Online or in person, I'll teach you how to work the system to get great marks, and provide you with notes/sample essays.

Subjects: IB English Literature SL/HL, IB English Language & Literature SL/HL, VCE English/English Language/Literature, Year 7-10 English

About me:
I graduated from high school in 2017 with an ATAR of 96.75, and a 7 in HL English Literature. I'm currently in the third year of my Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Melbourne, studying International Politics, and Chinese language.

I've been tutoring since graduation, so I've picked up a lot of experience and insight, but I can also offer you up-to-date and useful advice. I know what examiners and teachers are looking for, and I know the best ways to approach the IB and VCE curriculums, and your study. To this end, I generally help Year 10/11 students to develop sophisticated writing and reading comprehension skills, whereas I help Year 12 students to balance their workloads and prioritise certain study areas. For younger students, have a look at the section further below.

Teaching materials:
We'll work with whatever your teacher has given you, but I'll also supplement this with my own selection of top-scoring essays and commentaries, as well as some additional teaching material. If I don't have any prior material for whatever you're working on, I'm more than happy to develop some for you (e.g. write a couple of sample essays). In my experience, nothing works quite as well as an actual example of what you're expected to be producing.

Reading comprehension & essay writing:
Students often receive vague pieces of advice on reading comprehension, such as, "analyse the text on a deeper level", or, "there is no correct answer - make an argument". On the contrary, each text is written with a specific interpretation in mind, and while there is a level of flexibility in what you choose to discuss, examiners and teachers will be marking your responses with this interpretation in mind. Piecing together this interpretation is much like putting together a puzzle, or doing a maths question; there are certain formulas and approaches that help, and everyone is capable of learning them. Unlike maths, however, English teachers generally don't discuss these techniques explicitly, so this is something that I focus strongly on.

Secondly, I teach students how to structure essays and other assessed writing pieces. It's often quite hard to figure out how to structure a Year 12 length paper, when you've been taught throughout high school to only use three paragraphs. I'll teach you how to put your ideas into paragraphs that are more numerous, highly focused and strongly signposted than before. I'll also teach you the best ways to write up comparative essays and language analysis pieces. These are both particularly difficult to structure without proper teaching, as there's a lot of ambiguity in how you choose to organise them. I'll teach you a couple of highly effective structures, and we can figure out what works best for you.

For younger students:
While the majority of my students are from Year 10-12, I'm also keen to work with younger year levels. I'm really friendly and patient, and I'm good at motivating kids who currently aren't having the best time in English. Generally, half the battle is in presenting English to students in a way that engages them, and in building their confidence in the subject. I can help students to develop their basic reading comprehension and writing skills, or to improve their organisation and study habits. We might focus on tackling all their upcoming tasks, so that they're not stressed about them anymore; or on engaging them by jointly writing a creative piece about one of their interests; or on finding a couple of books that will help get them interested in reading. We can work together to discuss what sounds best for your kid.

Prices: Year 10-12: $60 an hour, including messaging/email support anytime.
Younger year levels: $50 an hour.

Experience

Since graduating high school in 2017, I've worked closely with a multitude of students from Year 7 - 12. I've helped to prepare students for their Year 11/12 English exams in both the International Baccalaureate Program and VCE, providing a strong emphasis on preparing for assessment. However, I'm also experienced in tutoring students in the younger year levels of high school, and those who take English as a second language. For these students I place a stronger emphasis on teaching generalised and invaluable language skills, and creating an engaging teaching environment.

Qualifications

I graduated school in 2017 with an ATAR of 96.75, and an IB Higher Level English score of 7 (a perfect score). The English skills involved in the IB course are highly applicable to VCE as well.

I'm now studying Politics and Chinese Language as part of a Bachelor of Arts at the University of Melbourne. Politics requires high level writing and analysis skills, and Chinese continues to develop my understanding of how to teach languages.
