Dr Maia Watkinson

 Sydney - Dulwich Hill

University Tutor for Academic Support

Sydney tutor in Communication, English, Essay Writing, Media Studies, Reading, Society and Culture

My name is Maia.

I am a very experienced University tutor and learning advisor available to provide tutoring services for any student who needs help with their academic work, as well as students studying subjects in the field of Arts and Social Sciences.

I am currently a casual tutor and lecturer in the Faculty of Communication at the University of Technology. I also worked for seven years as a learning advisor at UNSW, helping students from undergraduate through to postgraduate level on all matters related to their academic writing and assessment tasks.

I am located in Sydney’s Inner West, but in the current circumstances I am only running tutoring sessions via online platforms such as Skype or Zoom. The best way to contact me is via email: I will respond to your message within two working days.

I am a scholar in the area of Latin American Cultural and Literary Studies, though my expertise extends across a wide range of humanities areas of study and I have taught subjects in media, film and cultural studies. I have a PhD in Humanities in the broad area of Spanish and Latin American Studies, with a thesis that focussed on literature from Mexico. I have tutored at universities in Sydney since 2014, teaching mostly first-year subjects including Spanish and media studies.

I am also an expert in teaching the skills needed to succeed at University study, having for many years helped students from non-traditional backgrounds build the skills needed to do well at University. I specialise in teaching students how to approach assessment tasks at the tertiary-level, including essays, and improve their academic English. I have helped students understand and analyse assessment task questions, understand and apply feedback from their tutors, and manage their time to complete assessment tasks. I aim to help students understand the principles underlying academic writing and skills, which I believe has a flow-on effect to improve their academic work in general.

It is important to stress that I am only interested in guiding students through the writing process and providing them with the knowledge, strategies and tips they need to improve their academic work – I will not write essays or assessment tasks for students. I adhere to ethical codes of conduct and principles of academic integrity.

I am an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. I am also a member of the Association of Iberian and Latin American Studies of Australasia, the Higher Education Research and Development Society of Australasia, the Screen Studies Association of Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand, and the Refugee Education Special Interest Group in NSW.

I am a kind and patient tutor who wants to help students succeed at their university studies, whether by providing overall study strategies or specific discipline support.

Please do not hesitate to get in touch if you would like to know more about me or my tutoring services. I am very happy to respond to any questions you may have via email.

Seven years tutoring and lecturing at universities in Sydney (UNSW and UTS).
Seven years advising students on all matters related to their learning and writing at UNSW. I advised students studying degrees in all Faculties of the university and from undergraduate through to postgraduate level.
Two years helping students improve their English conversation skills and integrate into university life as a convenor of small-group conversation classes.
Four years helping mature-aged students build and strengthen the skills needed to succeed at university in the University Preparation Program at UNSW. In this program, I have helped students with diverse backgrounds, knowledge and experience to gain the skills and knowledge necessary to not only begin but do well in their tertiary studies. I have, for example, taught workers who were planning to enrol in university for a career-change but felt out-of-step with study, students who didn’t complete high school, and refugees.
One year mentoring Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students through the Indigenous Tutorial Assistance Scheme (ITAS) at UNSW, a Commonwealth-funded program which provides Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students undertaking degrees at UNSW with one-on-one private tuition. I taught students taking undergraduate units in the faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, including Indigenous Studies, Sociology and Gender Studies.
Two years mentoring students registered with the Student Equity and Disabilities Unit at UNSW to ensure that they submitted their best work.
