Mrs Mary Brown

Brisbane - Albany Creek

Brisbane Tutor in Creative Writing, English, ESL, Essay Writing, Maths, Reading, Special Needs

I believe in a holistic approach to education and value you as your child's first educator. My philosophy that very child can experience success and can progress in their own way at their own pace is fundamental to my teaching.

I work one-on-one with your child, supporting them where they are at and giving them the tools to become independent learners. Your first visit will involve a chat with yourself and your child so that we both have a full appreciation of your their needs and I will always endeavour to provide you with information regarding your child's progress.

My service may involve an assessment to gain insights as to your child's specific needs and a plan will be developed to support these needs.

I have had experience teaching students from Pre-Primary, Primary and Secondary up to adults completing their University Masters' Degrees.

Experience

I am a Registered Teacher and Holistic and Artistic Therapies Counsellor and have
worked in both the public and private sectors of education. Whilst working as a
classroom teacher, tutor, Lecturer and Support Teacher:Inclusive Education, I
have worked with children with extreme diverse needs, hearing impaired, gifted and
talented, behavioural problems, those with an ESL or Indigenous background,
learning difficulties, anxiety and other social issues.

Having undertaken various studies in Behavioural Management, ABA (Applied
Behavioural Analysis) for children diagnosed with ASD, Signed English, Gifted and
Talented, a number of Resilience and Social Skills development programmes, Grief
and Loss programmes, and Literacy and Numeracy Skills, has allowed me to develop my
knowledge and skills to fully support your child.

My interests include Boys' Literacy, having completed an Honours Degree with a
focus on Boys' Writing, where I was awarded the Education Chapter Alumni Prize; and
have participated in a review panel of a University-sponsored Boys' Literacy Project.
Along with a team of highly recognised Professionals, I was involved in the establishment
of the 'Chatting Children' Programme - an Oral Language Programme for pre-schoolers
and children in the early years, particularly those having difficulty with the reading process.
I have conducted workshops with this programme for both teachers and parents.

Having had much experience with supporting children through the transition from Early
Childhood organisations to Primary school and from Primary to High School I am only
too happy any enquiries you may have in this area. I have worked with a number of other
professionals (Speech Pathologists, Occupational Therapists, Psychiatrists, Psychologists,
Behavioural Support Specialists, Paediatricians etc.) supporting children's learning and social
development and am happy to continue this in supporting your child. I have held a position
in the Tertiary Education field, teaching students in a Masters' Literacy course and am happy to
support tertiary students with assignments.

I have conducted Professional Development workshops for both teachers and parents
in the areas of Literacy and Numeracy and have also facilitated Parenting Programme
workshops. One of my initiatives was the development of the 'APPLES For
Teachers' Programme - an Emotional Support Programme for educators. I am also a
trainer for an 'Emotional Literacy for Children' programme. Further workshops
developed by myself include the HUGS (Holding Unconditional Love and Gratitude for
Self) - an Emotional and Well-Being programme for parents/caregivers and also the
BEARS (Building Emotional and Resilience Skills) programme which assists children to
developing a sense of self, build confidence and resilience, cope with fear, manage their
anger and cope with loss.
