I recently resigned from my teaching position mid-contract - a first for me in my entire life (I'm 37-years-old) - after being utterly repulsed at the education system in place in Australia. The last time I taught in an Australian secondary school was in 2009, so the the mass-scale, mechanized, bureaucratized, almost industrialized nature of the profession in 2021 disgusted me. There was simply no way I could encourage meaningful "teaching" and "learning" to a total of approximately 140 kids per week. I would estimate that I spent approximately 60% of my paid working hours babysitting/crowd-controlling, 30% entering data, and 10% actually teaching. Unpaid overtime hours, of which there were many, were dedicated to marking, pointless meetings, and chasing up behaviour management.

As such, I feel I can make much better use of my skills as an educator in the field of private tutoring.

An effective tutor needs first of all to have a very high "emotional intelligence". This is true in the classroom, but even more-so in a 1-on-1 tutoring dynamic. You need to be able to read the psychological state of the learner, and tailor your demeanor accordingly. This is closely related to an awareness of the many "types" or at least variations amongst how people - not just children - learn. I am a big believer in the individualization of learning, and I believe one of my greatest strengths is quickly ascertaining how to most effectively teach a given individual. The next thing I would say, is that you must have the creativity and dynamism to make the subject matter interesting. I think my greatest strength of all, is, possessing an insatiable curiosity myself, I can always find a way of lighting the spark of curiosity in my students as well.

I am a fully qualified teacher, currently registered with QCT, with over a decade’s worth of teaching and tutoring experience in (chronological order): China, Australia, UK, Iraq, Iran (private tutoring), Russia (teaching primary, tutoring from pre-KG ages to adults in a corporate setting), France (EAL and Business English tutoring), Romania (EAL and Business English tutoring), Serbia (EAL and Academic Writing tutoring), and then back in Victoria, Australia (Years 7-10 English; and Year 12 Psychology).

In Moscow, Russia, over a period of 18 months I tutored Middle School and High School students in General English (of all levels), prepared students international exams (IELTS, TOEFL, A-Levels, GCSE, SAT, SSAT), and worked with high-achieving students’ applications to prestigious Oxbridge and Ivy League universities in the UK and the US respectively. I also taught Business English to corporate clients, both individuals and large groups in-company.

Learning "by the hour" is quite arbitrary, and it could be a disadvantage depending on the student, subject, etc.

After our first session, we should discuss what period of time (30mins to 90mins, who knows? everybody's different) is most suitable for you.

For example, if I was only tutoring you in one subject, that you have say, two 60min classes at school per week, unless you are working on an assessment, it might be best to have 2 x 40min sessions per week as opposed to 1 or 2 60min sessions. And then we can alter the length of the sessions (and the cost of course!) according to your needs.
