Is Your Child Failing Maths?
Melbourne tutor in Maths, Year 5 to VCE Math Methods
(1 student review)
Hi, my name is Michael Wion and I'm a qualified secondary teacher with more than twenty-three years experience tutoring Primary and Secondary school students in Maths.
I specialise in tutoring students who struggle with Maths or have a history of struggling with it. This includes students from year 5 up to year 12 VCE Maths Methods and VCE Further Maths.
I help them get from not having confidence with Maths and struggling with it, to the point where they have the understanding, skills and confidence to try harder questions without the fear of getting the wrong answer.
If your child has a history of struggling with Maths then it's more than likely they have gaps in their understanding of the basics. My Back to Basics tutoring program will help them to fill in these gaps and develop solid basic Maths skills. As these gaps are filled in your child will feel more confident with basic Maths and will find that over time, their school work starts to become easier to understand and do.
If your child has been doing ok with Maths and has found it relatively easy to do, but is now starting to struggle with the harder questions, then my strategy will be to help them understand the concepts and problem solving techniques needed to solve those harder questions. In each lesson I’ll be helping them with the specific questions they’re getting stuck on and helping them to get ahead of their class.
If your child is struggling with VCE Maths then my strategy will be to guide them towards their tests, SAC's and exams. I’ll do this by helping them to understand how to do the harder questions they’re getting stuck on. And by making sure they can do the step by step method of solving these problems so they can apply the methods to the new problems they’re going to encounter. If your child wants to get a certain ATAR score then I will help them to do that.
Students like my tutoring because I explain Maths in simple terms in a way that they always understand. I also give them an in depth understanding of the questions they struggle with and make sure they truly understand the underlying concepts.
The way I explain Maths to all my students is to engage them in the learning process by asking them what each step is, rather then just telling and showing them each step. Their answers guide me as to where to lead them next.
This strategy is incredibly effective because even if your child doesn't know the answer, just having a go will build their confidence over time, and they'll end up with a better understanding of the problem solving process.
Over time they'll lose the fear of getting the wrong answer and their confidence will grow and can extend into other areas of their life. I have seen this happen with every student who has come to me for tutoring - more confidence, a willingness to have a go at harder questions, more confidence going into tests and exams and ultimately better results at school.
I offer private and small group lessons for students. In these lessons each student is helped with the specific areas of Maths they need help with, using a whiteboard as the main teaching aid.
They are also given homework, study tips & advice and mentoring and support if they have poor organisational skills.
I also let them know if there are things that they are doing that are making Maths harder to learn and I suggest better ways of doing those things.
If your child likes the way I explain Maths to them and also puts the time into doing homework, they will improve their understanding and skills and over time will become more confident with Maths. How much they improve their school results will largely depend on how much effort they put in.

I tutor from home in Frankston. I also tutor students online via Skype and offer a complimentary first Skype lesson.
I was previously a classroom teacher at Eltham High School where I taught Maths, Science and Computer Science and tutored students part—time after school hours. I also gained some Tutoring experience at Kip McGrath over a 3 year period after I left Eltham High School.
Since leaving Kip McGrath in 1999, I've been tutoring students in Maths from my home studio:
- My students who had a history of struggling with Maths improved their understanding and results significantly. Many of them went on to study VCE Math Methods or Further Maths.
- My students who were struggling with VCE Maths improved their understanding and results significantly and obtained the ENTER score they needed to be accepted into the courses they wanted.
