Hi there, I'm Octavia!

If I'm going to be your new tutor, you should get to know me and why I am so passionate in helping other students achieve greatness! So here's a little introduction:

I just graduated and completed the HSC as dux boarding student at Hurlstone Agricultural High School. I was named a distinguished achiever for receiving band 6s in English, Extension 1, Legal Studies and Society and Culture, as well as top Band 5s for all other subjects. I am now commencing a dual degree of Politics, Economics and international law at both Sydney University and Sciences Po Campus de Reims in France. I offer tutoring for both year 11 and year 12 in all HSC subjects I excelled in, alongside offering my own resources such as essays that have attained full marks and comprehensive and organised notes.

In my time at high school, on top of managing my studies, I lead a myriad of extracurriculars such as national and state level public speaking and debating, was school captain and prefect, and even took time off school to attend the Melbourne Writers Festival after winning the John Marsden and Hachette Prize. As well as this, I spent my weekends saving up for post high school life by working part-time in a cafe and tutoring students in the boarding school. These activities, leadership roles and awards were, in my opinion, equally rewarding and definitively greater contributions to my character than just my studies. Having valued these experiences so much, I thus also offer guidance and help at a competitive rate for those seeking to widen their academic horizons in similar areas, such as editing and advice for writing competitions and debating and public speaking coaching.

Because I had ongoing support from those around me my whole way through, partaking in all of these extracurriculars and responsibilities all while maintaining top ranks at school, my last years of school were surprisingly stress free and truly the best years of my life so far. So, I truly understand and value the difference a great tutor can make to your learning experience. Not only by supporting you to reach your full potential in a given subject, but also by helping to guide you in balancing your study with any other commitments you have to ensure your final years of high school are not only successful, but well-rounded and the least stressful possible. After all, you do need to be a fully functioning person once you graduate, so balance is key.

Currently, I offer tutoring for:

Years 11 and 12: - English Advanced - English Extension 1
- Legal Studies
- Society and Culture (including Personal Interest Project help)
- General essay writing for all essay based subjects
- Public speaking, speechwriting and debating
- University interviews (inc. Sciences Po presentation)

Years 7 to 10: - English essay writing and structure in preparation for the HSC (Year 10)
- General English tutoring and creative writing help
- Public speaking, speechwriting and debating

My tutoring rates are:

- $60/hr for Year 11-12
- $55/hr for Year 9-10
- $50/hr for Year 7-8
- $40/hr for group tuition (classes up to 4 students)
- $30/hr for group tuition (classes over 4 students)

My availability for the Mosman/Sydney area is:

Monday 8:00 AM - 8:00 PM
Tuesday 8:00 AM - 8:00 PM
Wednesday 8:00 AM - 8:00 PM
Thursday 8:00 AM - 8:00 PM
Friday 8:00 AM - 8:00 PM
Saturday 8:00 AM - 8:00 PM

I charge nothing extra when travelling to tutor you or your son/daughter in your home if it is located in Mosman and surrounding suburbs (i.e. Cremorne, Neutral Bay). Likewise, tutoring sessions in the State Library of NSW cost no extra than the aforementioned rates. If you do, however, live further from these locations, a price can be negotiated for me to travel to you or somewhere convenient.

So if you are looking for a tutor who doesn't just provide essays and analysis for you to memorise and rewrite in your exams, but rather one who actually takes the time for you to fully understand a subject in depth and provide long lasting critical skills to analyse texts and issues yourself, and even support you in your extracurricular and alternative academic pursuits, I'm your tutor!

Don't hesitate to contact me with any questions. My mobile number is 0450 692 022 and my email address is octavia.chandler@protonmail.com

Experience

After two years of tutoring students to not only be at the top of their classes, but have gotten there after feeling completely lost previous to seeking guidance, my tutoring philosophy is simple: you have to understand a subject to start to enjoy a subject. And you have to enjoy a subject to start to thrive in a subject. That doesn't mean English has to all of a sudden be your favourite subject, but in my years of tutoring experience both junior and senior students, once I break down the syllabus structure and texts/materials on a deeper level with students in order for them to really understand what is needed from them in any exam or assessment, they begin to enjoy themselves as the confusion of a subject dissipates. Once this confusion is gone, they start to enjoy their learning with greater confidence, knowing not only what I am teaching them but exactly why I am teaching it, increasing their skill and understanding tenfold.

In this time I have also extensively offered guidance to students in the fields of public speaking and debating, having coached teams to compete on state and national levels after being successful in these pursuits during my own years of debate and public speaking. I have also assisted students in achieving accolades for their writing through competitions such as the What Matters Competition and the John Marsden and Hachette Prize.
