One of my high scoring essay is :

Assessment 1 Define Accountability, Competence, Scope of practice and professionalism and how these terms will guide your clinical practice during your clinical placements and once graduated. You will need to use the existing literature to support your discussion and explain why you think how you do. Introduction

The paper is discussing four major terms that guide the clinical practice during the clinical placements for nursing profession once graduated. The terms analyzed are accountability, competence, scope of practice and professionalism. All these four terms have their importance and effective outcomes for a nurse. When a nurse is accountable, the nurse becomes focused on attaining efficient skills and knowledge which results in becoming competent. When the nurse is accountable and competent in nursing, the nurse automatically moves towards the capability to work within the nursing scope of practice. Ultimately, when the nurse learns to work within the nursing scope of practice, the nurse works towards reaching the peak of nursing professionalism. Accountability is a term that refers to the nurses’ answer towards the people who are under their nursing care, their employers, the public, and the nursing regulatory authority. Every nurse is highly accountable for every decision that the nurse makes, their actions, responsibilities and behaviours which are inherent within their defined nursing roles which also include documentation (Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia, 2008). It is true to state that the accountability is not an aspect or duty that can be delegated. In the clinical practice, the registered nurse indulging in delegating activities that have to be undertaken by some other person is always accountable for his/her decision to be delegated, for timely and consistent monitoring of the other person’s level of performance, and to evaluate results of what the nurse has delegated (Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia, 2016). With accountability, the practicing nurse has the proof of what all the nurse has done or delegated with evident documents. With accountability, every nurse gets the opportunity to assess the risks and capabilities of oneself while practicing and delegating their jobs and tasks. Even the code of ethics for nurses (2008) has its first value statement stating that nurses value quality nursing care for every individual. This valuing code of ethics makes it mandatory that nursing care is efficient when nurses accept accountability for their nursing care provided, and taken actions and that also over reasonable grounds. Accountability in nursing comes with responsibility. If a nurse is accountable for every decision, the nurse develops legally and morally acceptable responsibilities to assure best skills, experience and knowledge gain for providing safe as well as competent nursing care. With accountability, the nurse becomes answerable for oneself as well as others for one’s actions. With accountability nurse becomes an effective patient advocate, a lifelong learner and a consistent professional dedicated for patient care and safety (Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia, 2008). Further, accountability is linked with competence. The code of professional conduct for nurses (2008) reveals that the very first conduct statement is where nurses practice in a safe and competent manner. These two concepts are interconnected in nursing. The nursing professional conduct reveals that nurses are always personally accountable for safe provision and competent nursing care. Competence is a standard and element which is again the responsibility of the nurse in maintaining their competence essential for present practice (Nursing & Council, 2008). It is necessary for the nurse to maintain competence by consistently participating in ongoing development of profession for maintaining and enhancing skills, knowledge and attitudes which are quite relevant for practicing in the management, clinical, research or educational setting. The nursing history reveals that practicing competence and excellence essentially highlights the professional nursing as making distinctive contributions towards the healthcare setting and sector (Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia, 2016). It has been found that the implementation of the practice competence as well as excellence concepts permits the nurses in taking their position within the multidisciplinary team having greater confidence as they become too able in articulating. They also become capable in discussing the distinctive nursing contributions for the patient care. In simple words, it can be stated that the nursing is the professional discipline which is truly capable in collaborating with different healthcare discipline professionals (Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia, 2016). If the nurse is competent, the nurse becomes efficient in providing nursing profession and services with a stronger platform that is required for collaborating on global terms within the initiatives for enhancing the healthcare effectiveness and access. Competence means perfect skill which fosters safety as well as comfort. It is about how the nurse approaches the nursing practice as well as underlies aspects of direct care in clinical manner (Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia, 2010). Scope of practice is a term in the clinical practice which is effective once the nurse gets graduated. This term defines which nurses are well educated, highly competent in performing and are permitted certainly by law. The real scope of practice gets influenced by context wherein the nurse actually practises, people’s health needs, competence level and nurse confidence along with the policy needs of the service provider (Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia, 2016). The code of Professional Conduct for Nurses in Australia (2008) also supports this term and its importance in enhancing nursing practice and quality. The nurses are quite aware of the fact after studying these codes of professional conduct and their internship experiences that undertaking activities which are not allowed or not within their nursing scopes of practice can actually compromise the patient care and safety. The nursing scopes of practice defines that these practices are grounded over every nurse’s knowledge, education, extent of experience, lawful authority and competency (Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia, 2010). As per NMBA’s Registered nurse standards for practice effective from 2016 defines standard 6 as providing safe, appropriate and responsive quality nursing practice which is the ultimate cope of practice. The registered nurse becomes efficient in providing and delegating ethical and quality goal-directed actions with good scope of practice learning and understanding. But, they are grounded over systematic and comprehensive assessment along with best available data and evidence for attaining agreed and planned results. The scope of practice as per this standard reveals that the registered nurse after graduation becomes effective in providing comprehensive quality and safe practice in attaining agreed goals and results which are quite responsive for nursing requirements for people (Nursing & Council, 2008). It is the scope of practice to provide efficacious timely supervision and direction in assuring that the delegated nursing practice is accurate and safe. The scope of practice defines the nurse to practice in accordance with the relevant guidelines, policies, legislation, standards, and regulations (Nursing & Council, 2008).
It is necessary to acknowledge now that the nursing scope of practice leads to the attainment of professionalism in this field. The code of ethics for nurses (2008) based value statement 7 signifies that nurses value the ethical management of the information involved. It is because management and generation of information (that includes the health care records as well as other documents) get performed only with integrity and professionalism. It needs the data and information that gets recorded being accurate, relevant and non-judgemental towards health, treatment and care of the person. Every health documentation is defined as the record which cannot be altered or changed other than by the process of adding more information (Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia, 2008). It is quite evident that the notation within the document or a record which is utilized for the better health care communication having a powerful negative or positive impact over the quality of care which is attained by the person. The professional nurses are always expected to make the demonstration of some degree of special attainment, altruism, right attitude and self-sacrifice in their dealings (Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia, 2016). Every nurse in professionalism requires understanding of their responsibilities as well as concerns which are most integral for nursing profession. With professionalism, nurse for clinical placements learns to be in discipline and being steady all across the day no matter what is happening in nurse’s personal and professional life (Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia, 2010). Professionalism in learning guides the nurse graduate in learning core values which are appreciated and expected in every nurse including responsibility, belief in human dignity, honesty, desire of preventing and alleviating suffering, integrity and patient equality. With professionalism, the nurse learns to be efficient in providing non-biased care for every patient irrespective of their culture and background (Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia, 2016). This is also supported by the code of professional conduct for nurses (2008) in the form of conduct statement 4 which is, “Nurses respect the dignity, culture, ethnicity, values and beliefs of people receiving care and treatment, and of their colleagues.” Both in planning and provision of effective nursing care, every nurse has to uphold standards of culturally competent and informed care which is an element of professionalism (Nursing & Council, 2008). Even its conduct statement 5 is the true feature of nursing professionalism as, “Nurses treat personal information obtained in a professional capacity as private and confidential.” The analysis of this code reveals that nurses, wherever relevant, involves in informing a person that for providing the competent care, it is most essential for disclosing the data which can be imperative for the clinical decision making by other healthcare team members. This is how nursing professionalism is also about being competent which is an element discussed above (Nursing & Council, 2008).

Conclusion

Nursing profession is a dynamic profession that is full of changes and complex elements with passing time. This is reason that the nurse has to be in complete control, accountable for one’s actions and behaviours, be always ready to learn and excel with competence and be a true and ethical professional in every possible manner.
