Every form of writing is creative writing; whether it be essay writing, academic writing, scientific publications, short stories, novels, poetry or otherwise. The structure of information, the choice of words, the order of information, all of this is formed for the purpose of expressing what the author "wants" to say. By no means is this a simple or easy task. The ability to be poignant, precise, and eloquent is a set of skills that requires extensive practice and engagement with a wide range of literal styles.
Therefore, my lessons are designed to help improve comprehension, reading skills (speed, accuracy), speaking (including public speaking), and most importantly- writing. Strong emphasis is placed on expanding vocabulary, skills to increase vocabulary and proper use of grammar when you need to use it. Over the course of developing these skills, there will also be a focus of introducing/ further developing literary techniques such as effective use of punctuation, critical thinking (use of who, what, where, when, why, how), different literary devices such as metonyms and synecdoche.
Secondly, aside from developing the skills to better read and write, a crucial part of my lessons will be to introduce research skills. Researching academic, peer reviewed texts, books, journal articles that are relevant to the topic you intend to study is not an easy task. With the convenience of modern search engines such as Google, it is very easy to find a large pool of sources that cover very 'broadly' about the topic you seek. However, in order to find expert information, or empirical research data to support your 'argument' is actually a rigorous task that could make the difference between earning a high credit or a high distinction. That is why at least one of my lessons will take place in a university library where I will teach/ tutor skills necessary to effectively research a topic through books/ online academic databases.
Ultimately, I subscribe to the self-determination theory of learning- this theory which comes from educational psychology posits that the best state of learning, where a student is able to learn the most, and most effectively, happens when that student is motivated. I believe motivation comes when a student understands why it is important to learn English, and when they 'enjoy' learning it. Therefore, my lessons are designed to be interactive, conversational- so that we have lots of opportunity to discuss ideas, and incorporate literature from a wide range of genres/ sources ranging from HSC prescribed texts to exerts from modern comic books. Because, learning should be fun, and learning should be as motivating as it is enlightening.
