ENROL NOW! We are taking in students for our Term 3 Year 11 Chemistry Crash Course in the upcoming winter break!

OUR STORY
Hey there, we are Jeffrey and Xander! We achieved ATARs of 99.85 (joint highest at Radford in 2020) and 99.65, were both in the top 3 of Chemistry at Radford (Dux and 3rd ranked), and both achieved High Distinctions in ANU Extension Chemistry (including Dux, 1st). We graduated from Radford in 2020 and both completed Specialist Mathematics, Specialist Methods, Chemistry, Physics, English, and ANU Extension Chemistry.

I (Jeffrey) am currently undertaking a research science degree at ANU called PhB (Bachelor of Philosophy). I came first out of 417 students in my recent university Chemistry course, topping both exams. Furthermore, I have achieved High Distinction in the Australian Chemistry Olympiad.
I (Xander) am currently studying medicine at Monash (BMSci/MD).

We will be jointly running the crash course. Together, we have had experience tutoring over 30 students for over 500 hours in total.

OUR COURSE'S PURPOSE & PHILOSOPHY
Our crash course condenses Term 3 of Year 11 Chemistry into a thorough and concise two week-long program. This course is the first of its kind and offers students that participate the chance to gain a head start over their peers for Term 3, provided by two former students who have mastered college-level Chemistry. Current students from Radford, CGGS, Marist, Merici, Daramalan, Dickson, Canberra College, and other colleges are all encouraged to enrol.

We found that the most challenging aspect of transitioning from Year 10 to Year 11 was the faster pace of content delivery and greater breadth of material covered. Looking back, we agreed that learning content prior to hearing it in the classroom helped with this. "Pre-learning" significantly improved our understanding of concepts and made our college experience more enjoyable. Through use of actual Year 11 assessments and school resources, we have replicated the Year 11 course content and refined the process of pre-learning. Students will get learn the complete Chemistry syllabus for Term 3 before the term has even begun.

Additionally, we incorporate our tutoring philosophy throughout this course. We will ensure students can receive the best marks by focusing on understanding and applying the fundamental concepts whilst developing strong critical thinking and problem solving skills.

COURSE DATES & FEATURES
The crash course will occur during the winter holiday break just before Term 3. We currently plan to run the course in a hybrid mode (in person at ANU and via Zoom) from July 9 to July 17. The dates of lessons within this period will be announced soon.

At the end of each lesson day, we provide worksheets and homework to practise concepts taught throughout the day and consolidate their understanding. Solutions for these will be provided the following day to allow students to check their working and make sure they're on the right track.

At the end of the course, students can choose to take an optional mock exam to test their understanding of the week's content - this will be invaluable since it will motivate students to learn, allow them to gauge their progress and will replicate a college exam environment. These exams will then be marked and students will be given individual feedback. Cohort feedback will be provided in a session on the following day.

Recordings of each session will be provided to allow students to re-watch or catch up if they have a conflicting commitment which prevents them from watching the lessons live.

"Jeffrey has been an amazing tutor who has significantly improved my results! His knowledge in Chemistry is outstanding. He is able to apply challenging theory to practical questions, and effectively communicate his knowledge to students. This has provided invaluable help for test and exam preparation, empowering and enabling students to study for themselves. He is also willing to review assignments and reports. By providing clear, precise and nuanced comments, his assistance has elevated students work, allowing them to also excel in the take home aspects of science education. Moreover, Jeffrey’s English tutoring has also been of an exceptionally high quality. His creative abilities and his critical thinking skills, have enabled him to analyse work and provide suggestions for improvement. And, by being a former dux of the subject, he has invaluable tips for creative writing and essays that most teachers or professional tutors would not suggest. This first hand experience is unique to his tutoring style and has helped elevate students work to a higher standard, allowing them to achieve top marks in English. Furthermore, Jeffrey’s assistance for Specialist Methods and Specialist Mathematics have provided significant benefits. He is able to solve challenging problems, and communicate his thought process and understanding to students. This has not only allowed students to understand various problems, but also enabled them to successfully approach new and unforeseen questions. He also has a substantial number of past papers that he is willing to provide. Overall, Jeffrey has been a very friendly tutor who is easy to get along with. He is passionate about teaching, and is always willing to give students quick, last minute help outside tutoring hours. Because of his assistance during Year 12, I was able to achieve around 100+ unit scores for Chemistry, English, Spec B and Spec A. So, if I could tell myself one thing at the start of senior education, it would be to ask for Jeffrey’s help earlier on! Thank you Jeffrey!"
