Highly experienced HSC and junior English teacher and tutor
Newcastle tutor in English
Literature, Essay Writing, Creative Writing, Reading
As a teacher with over thirty years’ experience, I am still a practitioner within the classroom, teaching the Advanced English course to senior students at a small, private school. In addition, I tutor from my home study to students in both the junior and senior years.
I am a firm believer in an organised, structured, teacher-centred lesson in which students are provided with both the skills and the knowledge required to perform well in the HSC and in junior assessment tasks. I am very familiar with the current changes which have already commenced in the junior years and the year 11 course through having attended numerous seminars, whilst keeping up to date with NESA resources. In addition, I spend at least three hours each day in my study researching and compiling my own notes on the new set texts for the 2019 HSC.
In keeping with the focus in the new syllabus on grammar and syntax in both junior and senior years, I also focus on these areas when teaching students how to compose their imaginative, discursive and analytical texts. I always provide scaffolds for students to follow, through which they develop the necessary skills to improve their own writing.
The students in my own class perform well over the state average. In the 2017 HSC, out of a class of 13, three students achieved in the Band 6 range, with most of the others falling in the mid to high Band 5.
I mainly tutor in small groups (of no more than four), but also do some individual tutoring, depending on the student’s needs.
SPECIALISING IN NEW CRAFT OF WRITING MODULE/ HOLIDAY WORKSHOP AVAILABLE
This new module is very different to previous years ( 2001- 2018) when students could write and then memorise ONE piece of writing. Now, to perform well, students should be able to write in a range of forms and for different contexts, and the questions in the HSC exam will be very specific. I am conducting HOLIDAY WORKSHOPS with the aim to provide students with the skills necessary to perform well in this challenging but rewarding module . Each workshop will be conducted over five hours in small groups of no more than five students. It will be held within a classroom at the private school where I currently teach near Morisset . Through the course of the day students will:
* initially engage in a close analysis of numerous prescribed texts from Module C - notes provided by me * This will include attention to : grammatical construction, word choice, structure, figurative language, point of view, characterisation, and any other techniques utilised by the respective composers. * Students will then be guided, using scaffolds I have composed myself, into composing a number of texts which imitate the stylistic features of the texts studied, and the insights/ideas within them . * Students will compose both imaginative and discursive texts which will be their own work which they can hopefully be very proud of.
Cost : $ 200 for the 5 hour day ( a lunch break will be added to that time ) If you are interested and would like more details please send an email.
