We are looking for a bright, energetic, positive and engaging university student to become a Reading & English Mentor for our 15-year-old son.
Our philosophy is that the best way to develop strong English skills is through reading. We want to help our son discover the joy of reading, develop a lasting reading habit, and become a confident, articulate and thoughtful communicator.
This is not a traditional academic tutoring role. We are looking for someone who can inspire a genuine love of books, language, ideas and learning.
Our ideal candidate
* Currently studying English Literature, Creative Writing, Education, Communications or a related discipline at university.
* An avid reader with a genuine passion for literature, books and storytelling.
* A naturally engaging personality—warm, energetic, enthusiastic, optimistic and able to connect effortlessly with teenagers.
* Someone who can make conversations lively, interesting and enjoyable, and inspire curiosity through their own enthusiasm.
* Able to recommend age-appropriate, engaging books based on a teenager's interests and reading level.
* An excellent conversationalist who enjoys discussing stories, characters, ideas and different perspectives.
* Patient, encouraging and capable of building a positive mentoring relationship with a teenager.
Someone who can make reading feel like a pleasure rather than homework.
What the mentoring would involve
* Developing a regular reading habit: Helping our son discover books he genuinely enjoys and motivating him to read independently.
* Reading comprehension: Encouraging deeper understanding of what he reads, including themes, characters, arguments and underlying ideas.
* Discussion and critical thinking: Having engaging conversations about books, exploring different perspectives and encouraging him to express his own opinions.
* Vocabulary and language development: Building a richer vocabulary and a stronger command of English naturally through reading.
* Communication and confidence: Using reading as a springboard for storytelling, discussion, debate and clear self-expression.
* Occasional writing: Encouraging short reflections, book reviews or creative writing inspired by his reading.
