I worked until December 2021 as a full-time Engineering academic at the University of Tasmania (UTAS). I was at UTAS for 18 years (2004-2021). In total, I worked as a Ph.D. qualified full-time Engineering academic for 29 years (1993-2021) both in Australia and overseas. In addition to my Engineering qualifications I hold a Bachelor of Education with Professional Honours (Higher Education), and a Graduate Certificate in University Learning and Teaching, both from UTAS.

I really enjoy helping students to build their confidence, achieve their goals and discover and fulfil their potential. I can tutor in Maths (and Spanish) at any school grade level from 7 to 13 including those students who are home schooled and those completing the IB Diploma Programme. I can support students with short- or long-term personalized "catch-up" tutoring, problem-solving, study skills, test-taking, and stress-management strategies.

Note that, in essence, "catch-up" tutoring aims to close any "potential" gaps between a student's current understanding and existing grade-level expectations. "Catch-up" tutoring is a great way of steadily boosting self-confidence and preventing academic issues from worsening over time. This highly personalized support helps students build a strong base for more advanced learning and overall future academic success. Experienced professionals like me can detect misconceptions, overgeneralizations, or mental blocks based on hesitation, eye movement, or tone of voice.

I can also help students with focused, intensive, and targeted preparation for admission, scholarship, and end-of-year IBDP and TASC exams. Furthermore, I can assist students with their University studies (including those in bridging, pathway, and pre-degree programs as well as those initial teacher education students preparing to sit the numeracy section of LANTITE).

I am a very flexible professional educator who tailors his tutoring to maximize the benefit to each one of his students. Much of the long-term success of my tutoring has built upon coaching (to identify and achieve students' specific goals), mentoring (to encourage and facilitate a professional relationship based on mutual trust), and personal rapport (to create a comfortable, relaxed, and respectful learning environment). These are all elements in my tutor's toolbox that usually tend to reduce "anxiety" and boost motivation.

If any of my students ever experiences self-doubt and/or stress when it comes to their mathematics work (either at home or school), this will be addressed by using re-assuring, re-framing, and re-motivating strategies to provide "fresh" forward-looking positive perspectives on the way students feel about and act upon these perceived learning "barriers".

Dr. Bernardo A. León de la Barra voluntarily retired in December 2021 from the University of Tasmania’s School of Engineering after 18 years of full-time service. Bernardo was a full-time University academic for 29 years and he is now available for face-to-face and online private tutoring in Mathematics (and Spanish) across school years 7 to 13, as well as at tertiary level.

Bernardo holds a Graduate Certificate in University Learning and Teaching, a Bachelor of Education with Professional Honours (Higher Education), and a valid registration to work with vulnerable people.

Bernardo is an empathetic tutor who encourages and motivates his students to reach their full potential by creating a safe and supportive learning environment where students can ask questions, make mistakes, and be themselves.

Between June and October 2025, Bernardo taught "Foundation Mathematics" at UTAS International Pathway College. In 2024, Bernardo taught "Mathematics Methods Foundation" at the Fahan School for 6 weeks to a mixed cohort that also included students from The Hutchins School.

Bernardo has marked TASC exam papers in "General Mathematics 3" (2022) and "Mathematics Methods" (2022 to 2025 inclusive).

Rates

Please note that the $80 per hour rate is an indicative base rate for the actual teaching time. This will increase depending on the total return distance travelled between my base location at Lower Snug and the meeting place for the session. In other words, the hourly rate for live fully interactive online sessions is $80.

For online tutoring, I use a state-of-the-art document camera https://www.inswan.com/en/INS-Flip4. I also provide my regular online students with a free-of-charge IPEVO mirror cam https://www.ipevo.com/products/mirror-cam so that they can make the most of the online tutoring sessions. Online sessions can be recorded (if requested), and a recording made available to the student for further review of what was done and said at that session.

The above fee includes the following specific tutoring services:

a) Comprehensive session preparation to make the most of the contact time with the student (this assumes regular two-way communication with the student so that each single session is as productive as possible while focusing on the most relevant content at the time of the session).

b) The provision of homework problems between tutoring sessions (if agreed with the guardians/parents and the student).

c) The provision of written advice to guardians/parents on their child’s progress (if agreed with the guardians/parents).

d) Availability to answer Mathematics/Spanish related queries via email or SMS between tutoring sessions.

e) Contact with your child’s Mathematics/Spanish teacher would also be included if allowed by the relevant school/teacher and authorized by you as their parents/guardians.

f) Preparation of tailored diagnostic materials to do an initial baseline assessment of a student's current understanding to personalize instruction and set realistic goals for the tutoring programme.

You can cancel tutoring at any time (no questions asked), and you are not locked into having/paying for any minimum number of sessions.

I am happy to visit guardians and parents, say at their home, for a free no obligation face-to-face informal conversation with them and the potential student(s).
