I am passionate about teaching kids Maths. I believe Maths provides a perfect platform to teach children to think, to ask questions, to admit they don't un derstand and to feel OK about it.....regardless of their aptitude for Maths. I really enjoy sussing out how a child thinks and gently steering them in a direction to make things easier.

The skills of being able to identify and communicate what it is that you don't understand, to take the help you need in order that you understand and then to apply your knowledge to slightly different situations are lifelong skills that can be applied to many situations in life. I am happy to sit with a student and identify what strategies they are using to tackle problems and suggest a range of different strategies that may be more useful in tackling the problem. I find that once these options are explained to kids and they realise that they have been doing things the hard way and a light bulb goes on in their head.

As an adjunct to my teaching I use the Maths Online program. This way I can quickly target the specific problem and take a child back to where they started to go wrong. This creates a very solid foundation. I am very experienced in teaching kids who are struggling. I have a maths brain but more importantly I am becoming more and more aware of how a non-maths brain functions. I address the downward spiral that happens when kids miss vital understanding and then get stressed about not understanding the current work. This can impact self-esteem and overall self-confidence.

With some of my students I spend about 20 minutes of the lesson doing a series of easy physical exercises that work on balance, visual perception, auditory perception and coordination. The combination of exercises using a balance board and other equipment really helps children who struggle with Maths. Also students who are having trouble with anxiety generally love these exercises and will often practice them at home. They help with overall concentration and learning.

Years 5 to 10 Maths naturally set a student up for the VCE years. If this knowledge is shaky then success will be very difficult in the VCE years. I thoroughly enjoy helping kids firm up this base knowledge so they can be off to a good start in their VCE.

Experience

I have tutored a variety of students up to year 12. I have had success with students of all abilities. If you are struggling I am happy to go back to the basics. If you want to be accelerated I can do that as well. I use the Maths Online program if my students need it. As a learning tool it is superlative, and the combination of one-on-one with the program is working very well.

Qualifications

My tertiary qualifications are in the biological sciences. However I have a love of Maths and of kids, so I am combining my 2 passions.
