MATHS AND PHYSICS tutor of HIGH ACHIEVING STUDENTS
Canberra tutor in Maths, Maths Methods, Maths Specialist, Physics
Hello!
I'm an undergrad student of Mathematical Sciences and Physics at ANU.
As a daughter of a mathematician I learnt very quickly that to nail a maths concept the strategy is not to brute force a billion practice problems but to make sure we understand why a "formula" works. What is it doing? How did we get it? How could we adjust it to a slightly different situation? After understanding the basics we look at problems. Although tougher, productively struggling with problems develops problem solving skills far more than skimming and reading the solution.
My sessions emphasise developing a strong grasp of the basic fundamental concepts. A solid intuitive basis is what allows being sharp and creative. I always spent time reviewing the basics of the content, entirely lost, while my classmates seemed to know what they were doing. But towards exams, working with them, I noticed they got stuck progressively often on things that to me seemed natural. Understanding the introduction fully is what allowed me to answer their questions. Maths is a hard thing to learn! And often taught in a way that doesn't encourage the intuition, but rather shoving numbers in formulas. This falls apart because as soon as there's a question of a slightly different form we don't recognise 'which numbers to plug where', whereas developing intuition allows you to see the simplicity of different problems JUST as easily.
Depending on your preference we could either go through worksheets and homework or just have a topic as a stimulus and learn from there.
Why tutoring?
The reason I look forward to my lessons is that breakthrough moment when a students finally understands, or makes the (difficult) switch from viewing maths as rough and unpleasant to fascinating and elegant. I enjoyed helping my friends through high school and college, particularly with Specialist Mathematics, and would be thrilled to help you. My strengths are teaching maths to year 5 and below, or year 10 and above but happy to teach any level.
