1. Bahasa Indonesia (ONLINE TUITION AVAILABLE via SKYPE, or if you live at Gold Coast, lessons in person are possible if you wish, in my home studio in Palm Beach.
2. Drawing for beginners - Lessons in person, ( one or two students of similar level of ability), in my home studio in Palm Beach.
3. PROOF READING, and correcting and editing of documents written in English. This is especially necessary if English is your second language and you think that it needs some professional help from a native speaker and qualified ESL teacher, who is also a journalist of 14 years experience writing feature articles in The Jakarta Post. ABOUT the tutoring - 1. BAHASA INDONESIA (The National language of Indonesia)
You can have online tuition in Bahasa Indonesia, via SKYPE or Facebook MESSENGER. The best option is a lesson in person, if you are living at Gold Coast. We will discuss that. I will email the course units to you as we proceed. The 10 unit course is for people who wish to begin learning Bahasa Indonesia to enrich their travel experience, to spend time studying in Indonesia, for work purposes, or planning for their future career prospects, I can introduce you to everyday language and advise you on the cultural ways of Indonesians. It should be noted that just to the North of Australia, is a nation of 270 million people, with a rapidly expanding "middle class". Australia's possibilities for trade and other links are enormous, and yet during the last 15+ years Australia has been turning it's eyes away from our nearest neighbour. Obsession with China seems to have partially blinded us. Meanwhile, Indonesia's economy is booming, modernising, and they have a growth rate of around 4%-5%, these last few years, while Australia has been struggling. They are leaving us behind in a cloud of dust! During the 10 years of President Joko Widodo's Presidency, incredible infrastructure building has been going. Yet, teaching of Indonesian language in Australian schools, has almost disappeared. Surely the time will soon come when the 'powers that be' wake up and realise that Australia has very few people who speak Indonesian or know the culture, and it has been a big mistake. There will be job opportunities and career prospects for those who have these attributes. Indonesia is an ideal trading partner and business partner too, because it is so close, and as mentioned has an rapidly growing middle-class population of wealthy and well-off people. These well-off and rich people outnumber the entire population of Australia.
Learning a language, means also "learning a culture" as the use of language is woven in with the cultural ways and manners. It also helps to know some history of Indonesia - the 350 year period of colonisation by the Dutch, the Second World War invasion by the Japanese, the war of Independence 1945-49, the New Order period under Suharto, 1965-1998, when the student revolution transitioned the nation to a Democratic government. All this enables us to understand who they are, and why things are as they are today.
I especially enjoy teaching Bahasa Indonesia, as I have had a close relationship with that country for over 25 years, and frequently visit there. I have many close Indonesian friends so always like to have long visits to spend time with them all. Most of my friends are active and famous in the Arts... film-makers, novelists, dancers, painters, actors, musicians. In the years... 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, I lived In Yogyakarta for about six months of each year. I have studied the history, culture, arts, sociology, spiritual life and fascinating background of Animism, Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam, and Christianity in Indonesia. I also keep informed of contemporary changes that are taking place in Indonesia, a young nation which is well on it's way to being in the top four economies of the world in the not to distant future. The history of different religions in Indonesia explains much about the Indonesian culture of today and helps us understand this country, which is so different from Australia. Also, the history of Dutch Colonialism of 350 years has had an important influence.
Indonesians are extremely warm and friendly people and if you can speak some of their language, you will be richly rewarded with appreciation and friendship. They will praise you quite sincerely for even trying and even if you use a few common expressions they'll make you feel very much encouraged to continue. Some cultural understanding as well as some Bahasa Indonesia, opens doors, and hearts and opens YOUR mind too.
For 14 years I was a regular contributor to The Jakarta Post, the widely distributed English language daily newspaper... www.thejakartapost.com
There were about 120 of my feature articles published there.
A lot of my students to date, have been surfers who go to Indonesia regularly. Also business people, regular holiday-makers, and some who propose to retire to Bali. Many of my past students have formed friendships, and wanted to be able to communicate better with their Indonesian friends. My own long history of being involved in surfing and as an ex-champion of my country (NZ) in the "classic era" , helps me to share the experience with the surfing community too. Surfing has had a major influence on all of Indonesia.... particularly Bali. From Bali surfers soon began to explore remote areas all over the archipelago. Since the mid 1990s commercial "surf travel" via specially planned boat trips to most of the Indonesian waters became available, and the early pioneers of that found some of the most famous and superb surf spots of the world. This drew many international surfer visitors to small and remote communities that had never been visited by foreigners before, and brought a lot of change to places where the local people knew no English at all.
2.DRAWING FOR BEGINNERS:
TAUGHT IN MY HOME STUDIO IN PALM BEACH, GOLD COAST, QLD; For Art students, I have designed a drawing course for beginners, which gives a foundation for all your further adventures in drawing and painting. This course has been very successful for many past students of mine. I have years of experience in being commissioned to paint portraits, and various other commissions too. I taught and developed this "Drawing for Beginners" course over many years and it led on to some of my students becoming very proficient, and even having their own exhibition. You may just wish to learn to understand art better, or know more about Art history. A drawing course will open up your eyes and your mind and give you insights that will stay with you forever. You will learn, Tonality (Light and shade) for rendering Form, Visual Texture in drawing, line-work, how to observe closely, perspective drawing, basic portrait drawing, principles of drawing the standing figure, colour theory, and more.
Much of this knowledge is also useful to photographers, interior decorators, cinematographers, and other careers where colour, composition, and observation are crucial. It's no accident that quite a few film-directors have also been painters. Study of art helps you to develop ability in visualisation, in observation, in seeing composition and balance and the power of colour, and of light and shade.... (and many other things).
Most students who did the course - stayed with it for at least 10 lessons, thanked me by saying "Thank you - You have taught me how to see. I notice much more in the world around me now!"

I have a Diploma in teaching English as a Second Language, and a total of 30 years of experience in private tutoring of ESL, as well as in Drawing for Beginners, and Bahasa Indonesia. Over the last 20 years I have also assisted quite a lot of adults, living at Gold Coast, but who come from other countries, to prepare for their IELTS tests. They included, Russian, Japanese, South Korean, Brazilian, and Indonesian people.
In 2001, I taught for six months in a reputable English language college in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, "English First", (which is a world-wide group.) I also did private tutoring in that city, for some business people who needed to speak better English for their work. I've done private English tutoring at Gold Coast, since 2002.
I love the English language and I know it well. As a demonstration of my English competency, I worked as a professional writer of feature articles for a major South East Asian newspaper, The Jakarta Post. Approximately one hundred and twenty of my published feature articles can be seen by going to www.thejakartapost.com (unless it is not behind a "pay-wall"). They are mainly about various arts and culture, and especially cinema, and profiles from interviews with the people in those fields. Also, some articles about the influence of surfing, on remote parts of Indonesia (as well as Bali, the first place in the archipelago to become a surfing hub.) Also, I am a professional writer on world cinema, and my website is www.cynephilia.com where you may view my writings on that subject.
My work demonstrates my capability with the English language, which I can pass on to you, and knowledge of various subjects.
I love meeting people from other countries and helping them to improve their English skills. I enjoy hearing about their countries and families, and I also enjoy giving advice on cultural differences and any other help that my students need. My interest in other cultures and differing ways of life, and my wide travel experience assists me to understand my students' backgrounds.
