Hi, I am an online English/IELTS teacher from the UK, and I offer 2 types of lessons:

-1 hour IELTS/English lesson. ($45 AUD)

Let me explain a little more about how my lessons work.

1?? 45 minute speaking lesssons

Many of my students like to have conversation lessons which contain a mix of:

-'Free talking' (I give you lots of feedback and correction on your English)
-News articles (Culture/Music/Arts/Film reviews) and discussion.
-Grammar focus (Within the context of conversation, we look at different tenses/conditionals/relative clauses/etc.)

The lessons are designed around your needs.


2?? IELTS Lessons

I have been helping students to increase their IELTS scores and improve their English for over 14 years.

?? IELTS Speaking:

My approach is dependent on what score you need. Many of my students require band 8, while others need a lower 6. Here is a general guide of what happens during my lessons.

?? I will identify your grammatical mistakes and we will work on your specific problems to help you overcome any bad habits or grammatical misunderstandings. My students often make mistakes with subject-verb agreement, tenses, articles, prepositions, conditionals, etc. I will give you lots of feedback and exercises for homework after each lesson (all the materials are included for free).

?? A lot of my students struggle with ideas for the part 2 and 3 of the speaking test. During the lessons we will develop an 'idea bank' for you, so you can reduce hesitation and thinking time. Consequently, your fluency and ability to think of ideas, and develop them spontaneously, will improve. You will have lots of practice!

?? I will teach you key high-band vocabulary for the wide range of topics that frequently come up. The lessons give you the space to practise this new vocabulary and I will encourage you to use new words in different settings and topics.

?? Sometimes, students come to my lessons with a lot of memorised answers. For lower bands, this can be beneficial. However, if you are trying to get a band higher than 6, you need to be natural and fluid in your speaking. We will work on your ability to speak naturally, spontaneously without hesitation, and at length.

You will have the chance to practise a lot and receive precise feedback. During a 1 hour speaking class you can practise 3 x part 1/2/3 questions.


?? IELTS Writing

Students email me their task 1/2 essays before the lesson and I use Google Docs to correct and give feedback during the online lesson with you. Here are some common things we will cover within the online lesson:

?? Ideas! This is a big problem my students have with all the unfamiliar topics in the writing section. In each lesson we will look at the common themes that come up again and again (housing/environment/energy/etc.). I have some fantastic materials and I will give you homework which covers everything you can expect.

?? You will have a full understanding of the different types of questions (Opinion essays/Advantages-disadvantages/2 question types/Problem-solution). Students lose many marks by failing to understand what is required for each type of essay.

?? An understanding of simple, complex (this doesn't mean complicated), and compound sentences. You need to demonstrate a range of sentence structures to the examiner for a higher score.

?? Many of my students need to work on simplyfing their essays. ? You might think this is surprising, but students often try to 'over complicate' their essays with irrelevant or unnecessary ideas, or try to impress the examiner with unsuitable vocabulary or overly ambitious grammatical structures, which contain frequent errors. We will work on making your essays as error free and as clear as possible.

?? Learn to plan simply and effectively. This is extremely important! However, this is an often overlooked part of task 2 essay writing for many students. We will spend a lot of time looking at different task 2 questions and you will develop your ability to plan essays and create a map before writing anything. ?? Once you have understood the importance of the above foundation, we can then develop your noun phrases, and improve upon your range of quantifiers, noun clauses, relative pronouns, cohesive devices, connectors, etc.

?? I will help you with the different task 1 essay tasks (academic/general), and you will learn techniques such as being able to write well using the passive voice, the language of change, proportions, etc.

Experience

Initially I taught general English in and around the Chiba area in Japan for 2 years. I later worked at several language schools and decided I would like to specialise in helping students pass the IELTS test. Since 2013 I have been focusing on preparing students for the IELTS exam and I invite you to visit my website which has lots of feedback from my students.

Qualifications

After graduating from Manchester University, I obtained a TEFL certificate and a CELTA a little later.
I have done numerous study workshops to specialise in teaching IELTS.
