This tutoring program aims to support students with managing their learning at school by targeting any gaps in their literacy skills. The goal is to develop each student’s literacy confidence, enjoyment of reading and overall performance in learning areas that use language. Tailored programs are designed and implemented for beginning readers through to high school students up to Year 10 (ages 8 to 16 years). The intensive program is structured but motivational and learning sessions include phonic knowledge, vocabulary, reading fluency and comprehension, spelling and creating written texts. Tasks are designed around mastery learning techniques, repetitive but quick, to develop word recognition and reading fluency at increasing levels of difficulty. Tutoring in essay writing skills is also available for high school students.
It is essential for students to enjoy the learning and also see the tasks as relevant to their needs. To benefit from the program students should attend tutoring for a total of at least one hour each week. This can be in smaller time slots to suit student and family needs. Tutor’s home is located in the CBD area of The Junction close to bus stops, The Junction Primary School and St Joseph’s. Tutor has current Working with Children Check & ABN. Available times are Wednesday to Friday mornings from 7am to 9am or afternoons from Tuesday to Friday 2:30pm to 6pm. Best contact is by phone: 0414541848

Experience

The tutor has 30 plus years of school based experience in one to one and small group learning support in both primary and high school settings, ages 8 to 18. The tutor is trained in the implementation of diagnostic assessment and learning techniques to support students individual needs. The program is tailored to support low progress readers and writers in a systematic approach. This includes assessing students, setting learning goals and providing one to one or small group instruction in word attack and word recognition skills, spelling reading and writing. Tutoring in essay writing skills is also available for high school students.
