Hello, my name is Joe! I am a medical student starting at Flinders University in 2026. In 2025 I completed an honours in biomedical science teaching - specifically the role that ward round pedagogy has in enhancing tertiary students’ understanding of physiology at the University of Queensland. I graduated in 2024 with a Bachelor’s of Biomedical Science, and upon taking GAMSAT on the third try in my honours year I scored in the 98th percentile with individual section results of 67, 61 and 86. Following achieving this score I went onto receive an interview and offer to study medicine at Flinders University in metropolitan Adelaide. For the high school students and/or their parents reading this, I managed to graduate from St. Patrick’s College Mackay with a 97.35 ATAR. So how did I do it? How did I best both the challenge that is the QCE ATAR and the GAMSAT, all the whilst maintaining a good work-life balance without selling my soul to the hustle and grind?

It all started when I immigrated to Mackay from London in 2018 - facing a completely new educational system and plummeting from my typical A+ grades to barely passing. It was a complete slap in the face, and I felt that being based in a rural school setting limited my access to certain educational resources such as a private tutor or group tuition. This led to me completely disengaging with school and vehemently wishing to achieve higher but not understanding the mechanism behind how to learn and retain information. When I started to strive for the highest ATAR possible in Year 11, I started to recognise how to efficiently prepare and I realised that to push into the 85%-90% range in scores you have to build a good foundational understanding of the subject and to drill and target areas that you are weaker in. I also came to learn ways that I could retain information for exams without mindlessly slogging away for hours in a day. This I can teach to you to pave your path to success by supporting you through the journey.

As a tutor I encourage a student to study effectively and in a manner that is specific to the learner. My approach to tutoring is to work with both you and your child on addressing concerns and supporting their learning in a manner that garners positive results. Every lesson is individual to the student and will be planned prior to ensure that any topic for upcoming assessments is well understood. I encourage students to contact me especially around high stress periods such as exam blocks as this allows me to provide additional support as needed.

Recently, I received training from a tutor with 4 years of private tutoring experience and 4 months of class tutoring experience. In my own private tutoring experience I have aided a Year 10 student in IB mathematical methods and another student in Year 12 to achieve maximum marks in maths methods improving from a C grade to consistent As. Additionally, I have assisted a second year university student with GAMSAT preparation in terms of the basic critical thinking skills required which resulted in an increase in score by 15 points.


As someone who graduated in 2021, I have an understanding of the QCAA ATAR syllabus and assessment items. From my own experience with these assessments I acknowledge that often exams and assignments are daunting tasks where students can struggle. My style of tutoring aims to understand the students' learning style to allow for better engagement and understanding with the content. Furthermore, my knowledge of the QCAA marking guides allows me to provide helpful feedback and assist students in improving their assignments.

Qualifications

I graduated from St. Patrick's College Mackay in 2021 with an ATAR of 97.35. During high school I learned through my own journey that achieving high marks is not simply a matter of sitting through a lesson but is rather the motivation of the student to learn in a way that suits them.

Following high school I obtained a bachelor of biomedical science from the university of Queensland and undertook a research honours project in biomedical teaching. This project has provided helpful insight into how adapting content to suit a student results in better grades and overall increased student satisfaction. Following this, I am starting a new chapter at Flinders Medical School in 2026.

In the March 2025 sitting for the GAMSAT I scored an 75 which is in the 98th percentile with section results of 67, 61 and 86. With these scores, I went on to successfully obtain entry into Flinders Medical School at the metro campus despite having a subpar GPA of 5.5 which I can credit to the strength of my GAMSAT results and my interview preparation that led me to getting 96% in the interview. I am determined to share my assistance in the hopes of improving the accessibility to medical schools via the post-graduate pathway.
