Qualified Primary Teacher — 15 Years' Experience
Melbourne tutor in Algebra, Calculus, Creative Writing, English, English Language, English Literature, Essay Writing, Further Maths, General Maths, General Science, Geometry, Maths, Maths Methods, Reading, Special Needs, Statistics, Study Skills
I'm a qualified primary school teacher with over 15 years of classroom experience across schools in Queensland, Western Australia, Victoria, and the UK. I've held roles including year level coordinator and Leading Teacher. More recently I have left the classroom, continuing to work for the Department of Education Victoria in a central role supporting policy while completing my Graduate Diploma in Psychology, majoring in childhood and developmental psychology. I hold a current Working with Children Check.
For me, teaching has always been about more than getting through the curriculum. It's about building genuine relationships with students, understanding their interests and how they learn, and weaving that into lessons so they genuinely want to be there.
My areas of expertise are primary mathematics, reading, and writing, with a particular focus on foundational literacy and numeracy. This includes phonics, structured literacy approaches, and early numeracy concepts such as subitising and place value. I also have extensive experience working with neurodivergent students and children with learning disabilities.
My approach to tutoring reflects my approach in the classroom. Initial sessions focus on assessing the child's current understanding to identify any gaps and establish a clear starting point. From there, I develop an individual learning plan in collaboration with the child and their parent/s, with goals mapped to the Victorian Curriculum. Parents/carers will receive a copy of this plan, and it guides the focus of each session week by week.
Sessions are hands-on and structured around modelled, shared, and guided learning, with optional activities for your child to complete between sessions if you'd like to keep the momentum going. Some resources will be supplied, though I'll ask you to have a few basic materials on hand, such as mini whiteboards and a workbook. At the end of each session, I'll give you a clear rundown of what we covered and what's worth practising before next time.
While my experience is mainly primary school (Foundation to Year 6), I'm happy to support secondary students who are experiencing difficulties with foundational literacy or numeracy.
I'm available weekday evenings and weekends, with sessions held in your home within the local area, or online via Zoom.
