Hi I'm Ryan, I've developed a deep passion for interdisciplinary thinking (maths/humanities) so I'm studying Law and Politics, Philosophy & Economics (PPE) at UNSW. Being able to 'think' in the language of 'maths' and 'the arts' uniquely allows me cater to individual students and build upon their learning methods. I'll mark responses and have marks cross-checked (via commission) with other established, well-esteemed HSC tutors to ensure accurate feedback.

Having completed the HSC recently, I'm intimately familiar with the entire process (including how to get EAS). I know how to study very efficiently before tests, and combined with my expertise in the humanities, students can make the most out of any tutoring session.

Going to countless tutoring centres (Kurt, Matrix, Proficiency, Pre-Uni, Sigma, Matt Cash...) has exposed me to various methods of teaching and learning, so I know how different students learn and what teaching methods work. I will cater this firsthand knowledge to students by utilising universally effective methods (such as active recall - which are empirically supported) and also their own strengths to ensure engagement and thus learning, rather than just memorising. This will allow students to develop the skills to learn, write and self-evaluate without the training wheels.

I've also been a marker at Pre-Uni and CS Education, marking all subjects from maths to creative writing. As a result, I can see students' responses through the markers' eyes, so I can teach them how to write responses markers will love.

I'll help students struggling in areas through applying interdisciplinary skills: for example, breaking down maths concepts in words for students familiar in the humanities, rather than lecturing them: eg why are we using this formula, and what are we trying to achieve.

Writing is a crucial skill. It's integral to essay writing in the humanities and English Adv, which is mandatory. Most other subjects actually require a significant amount of writing (Physics, English, Legal Studies, Biology...), so it's crucial that STEM students can reach their potential. Studying law has bolstered by writing skills I've developed during the HSC for subjects like history, so I'll effectively teach:
- How to write efficiently: limited time in-test
- Structuring essays
- Much more!

Maths (Standard, 2U + 3U)

- Teach you how to use online tools like Leibniz and Claude (and their shortcomings)
- Prioritise conceptual learning and active recall practice. Will challenge students to the edge of their comfort zone

History (Ancient, Modern + Ext)
- My knowledge of general history and politics + experience marking lets me teach students a genuine understanding of topics (instead of inefficiently memorising a collection of facts) and how to write great responses

English (Adv + Ext)
- 83/100 in BHHS Trials (Baulko avg = ~70); wrote full-mark exemplar responses used by teachers
- 20/20 in Trials short-answer response
- My knowledge of history and politics will be especially helpful. Markers love this stuff being used as context, showing how smart students are - this distinguishes a 16/20 from a 19/20 essay.
- Studied Nineteen Eighty-Four (1984) and T.S. Eliot, where socio-political context is quite important!

Physics
- Many subjects (like physics, biology, chemistry) actually require a surprising amount of writing (with possible questions like "explain how scientific methods have evolved over time"). - I've consistently full-marked more humanities-oriented questions like: "Many scientists have performed experiments to explore the interaction of light and matter. Analyse how evidence from at least THREE such experiments has contributed to our understanding of physics. [8 marks]" (2024 HSC Q32). I'll teach students how to apply and communicate their knowledge for markers. These are often free marks, but many STEM-thinking students can't effectively show markers their understanding

Being a law student has reinforced my ability to write accurately yet concisely. I will teach students how to write efficiently for markers in test conditions. This is crucial for every single subject (except maths), not just english or history. Being able to write efficiently and well in subjects like physics will set you apart from other students, basically giving you free marks.

Earlier in high school, I'd actually thought of myself as stronger in STEM/maths. My skill in writing was therefore developed, so I know I can teach principles of writing to students who are traditionally stronger in maths or science, since writing (for the HSC) is fundamentally quite a logical, where for example you can follow a standard structure.

- HSC vs internals (marking standards, how rankings work, question types...)

Qualifications

Studying law and PPE (politics, philosophy & economics) at UNSW (Aus #1). I'm well-versed in the humanities but also maths, so I can help students logically understand subjects which they're not confident in.

I've also been a marker; this has really shown me how markers think. Consequentially, this helps students to maximise their marks. I can show students how to write responses in a way such that markers can see that you've easily satisfied the rubric/criteria. This is very helpful in-test, so that everything you write will be worth marks.
