I travel to these locations
Rochedale, Springwood, EMP, Runcorn, Underwood, Rochedale South, Daisy Hill, and some nearby suburbsI tutor from Year 7 to Year 12 level in all school subjects listed, and in essay-writing and study skills for Uni students as well. I also tutor adults (non-school students). I do home visits and online tutoring. I also teach cello for beginners and intermediate learners (there are different rates for cello lessons. Please see below).
Experience and Qualifications:
I have 15 years of tutoring experience, I have studied education (Graduate Diploma of Education - Secondary), and I have a love of learning and sharing it.
Cello teaching - I've been playing the cello most of my life, having taken solo lessons at school and playing in ensembles and community orchestras at various times. I perform non-professionally and love creating music with others.
Approach:
My tutoring approach is encouraging and relaxed, but firm, with a balanced agreement between tutor and student regarding effort and results. My main goals are to help students become lifelong, independent learners, and to achieve confidence in their abilities. Like all tutors, I give two types of tutoring: help with homework/assignments, and skill improvement. The second supports the first, and leads to independence.
Cello teaching - I teach the essential basics of techniques, understanding the instrument, and reading music. For intermediate learners, I focus on improving sound and technique and, if needed, extending the type of music a student plays. I want to help learners develop a love for the instrument, discover the joy of creating music, and explore what's possible - all while building a strong foundation of skills and knowledge.
Materials and Format:
I use my own materials and those I gather from good sources. I also respond to what each student needs, which often means creating or finding new materials, and adapting what I have. Rather than a rigid curriculum approach, it's responsive to students' needs (although this will often follow a similar pattern, since many students struggle with the same things and study the same things at school). The usual process for teaching skills, as in most teaching and coaching, is: explaining the concept, giving examples, practising with my help, practising independently, and correcting mistakes. For schoolwork support, the format is looking at the student's work or assignment, identifying what they most want or need help with, and taking them through that.
Schedule - Days/Times:
I have a variety of days and times available, Mon-Sat, so please contact me to schedule. I can also see adult learners at earlier times on weekdays. During school holidays, I have more times available.
Visits and Online
I offer online tutoring (via Zoom), and home visits in the local area. An online format offers many of the benefits of a home visit, plus some that are unique to the format. It's most appropriate for students with enough motivation to work independently. (All tutoring works best with this kind of student, of course).
Cello lessons: I travel to students' homes.
