Hi, my name is Michael. I have four children aged 11 - 22 and live in Marrickville. I'm a published author and previously owned my own bookshop.

I have a reliable car and can be very flexible with tutoring times and am happy to come to you/meet in a library or cafe or at your home. I communicate best by SMS or email. I'm neurodiverse and LGBTQI+ friendly.

I really enjoy tutoring as I think engaging with literature and knowledge more broadly tends to make people feel happier about themselves and more confident in dealing with the world around them. I also love the fact that working closely with a student on studying a text often leads me to find things in books I never noticed before.

As a writer I'm also very happy to tutor students in creative writing. My own undergraduate degree was in creative arts and I have learnt a great deal about the difference between useful teaching in the area as opposed to trying to make someone change who they are as an artist to suit the teacher/tutor.

Experience

I have tutored university students, high school students and also new migrants (tutoring in English). I have also delivered seminars to university students on particular aspects of contemporary poetics and poetry.

Qualifications

I hold a Bachelor of Creative Arts in Writing & Literary Theory, a Bachelor of Arts with first class Honours in English Literature, and a Masters of Commerce in Business and International Security. I also have a university major in history, and am a published writer. My three books include two collections of poetry and one verse novel, and I have been shortlisted for or awarded the NSW Premier's Prize for Poetry, the Dame Mary Gilmore Prize, and the Australian Book Review Laureate's Fellowship.
I'm currently studying a postgraduate law degree (Juris Doctor)
