Tutoring days and hours: negotiable, but preferably Tue or Thu @ 4.30pm – 5.30pm

Preferred contact method: by email. Use: hansswan54@gmail.com

Preferred meeting place: my location or student home if less than 10km from me

My academic achievements: studied four-year physics honours degree followed by a postgraduate PhD in physics at UNE, Armidale, NSW.

My work experience: included teaching physics to RAAF technologist apprentices, at RAAF Wagga, followed by a physics lectureship at Charles Sturt University, Wagga, for 33 years.

Why I enjoy tutoring: Once I started studying physics at school, I developed a passion for understanding basic physical principles and how the universe operates. I have also loved communicating these ideas with others. So, this has made my tutoring experience very enjoyable, especially when seeing students grasp new physical concepts.

My main expertise: teaching all topics of first year university physics, teaching medical physics, in particular MRI and Ultrasound physics at undergraduate and postgraduate level. I also have long term experience at tutoring physics to high school students.

Approach to tutoring: my tutoring can be offered either face-to-face or online (via zoom). My approach is to use a questioning style, while developing new concepts. I present many diagrams and pictures to clarify my presentation. I give numerical examples to reinforce understanding. Real-life applications are always referred to.

Tutorial structure: at the start there is a quick revision of relevant previously learned material, followed by coverage of new material. In later sessions there will be problem solving via worksheets and past exam papers relevant to the ACT BSSS Physics T course.

Recommended texts: text used by student in school, plus: Excel Year 11 and 12 Physics by Mark Butler (Pascal Press, 2019).

Levels of tutorials: Senior high school and first year university.

Testimonials from colleagues: (1)
“I have known Hans for over twenty years. I knew him first when we were at the same institution where we both completed doctoral degrees. Since then, I worked with him at the same University. He is an outstanding teacher who is very dedicated. He is friendly and patient and can explain difficult concepts in physics in a clear way. I have seen very positive assessments by students in their feedback on lecturing staff. I would thoroughly recommend him in capacity as a tutor.” Alan

“I have been a colleague of Hans Swan for several years. Hans has always been a dedicated teacher and was always available to help students. Students have really appreciated the way Hans was willing to help them through difficult content. I would highly recommend Hans to any student learning physics.” Matt

Experience

I have extensively tutored Year 11 and 12 HSC Physics to both private students as well as to a physics cohort doing Year 12 physics at a Secondary College. I have also tutored university students needing help in Physics subjects offered at undergraduate and postgraduate level. Further I have also tutored students needing help in Mathematics at HSC level.

I have always enjoyed passing onto ny students, my passion for physics. I use a tutorial style during my teaching, asking questions as I proceed, to check whether students are following my arguments. I discuss the concepts involved and then do tutorial examples to consolidate student understanding.

When students have difficulty with particular concepts, I patiently work through the material again, or use different methods and examples to explain. I also provide exercises for the student to do prior to his/her following tutorial. This helps monitor student progress. I may also refer students to relevant you-tube videos to watch.
