Hello!
My name is Nick and I graduated with an ATAR of 98.85, and am a current 3rd year medical student, and I am offering tutoring for primary and early secondary Mathematics and English, with the specific aim of receiving scholarships at top elite private schools, or selective schools.
Getting admission into a selective school, or a scholarship at a private school is a once in a lifetime opportunity, that will enable your child to stride towards their larger goals in life. While tutoring for the exams can seem like an expensive process, the reality is that it's a small percentage of the cost of sending your child to an elite private school without a scholarship (with many costing $40k+ a year).
Having tutored over 50 students since 2020, I am proud to say that over 85% of them have received offers from selective schools and various private schools (Ballarat Clarendon, Scotch College, St. Kevins College & Penleigh and Essendon Grammar School.)
I encourage all parents to reach out to me atleast 12 months prior to their child sitting their relevant scholarship examination. This allows me to consolidate their existing knowledge, then teach them the content required to know for the exam (usually 1-2 years ahead of the grade the student will be in at the time of sitting it) and then ideally a few months for just practice exams.
Structure of teaching:
1. My first lesson is free. It will involve a standard level English and Math test which will act as a diagnostic test to see the level your child is at and what we need to work on. On top of this, it allows me to ensure that this is the right program for your child. Unfortunately in the past, parents have attempted to get me to tutor their children for the selective exam, only for the child to be behind on Math and English that they should know (and realistically, it would be difficult for them to get into a select entry high school/do well in a scholarship exam). I pride myself on my transparency, and do not want to take your money if I believe I cannot help you. However, that doesn’t mean the door is closed. I will provide personalised recommendations (including textbooks and resources), and your child is welcome to return for reassessment in the future once they’ve built up their foundational knowledge.
2. Ongoing Lessons
If your child is a good fit for the program, we’ll begin weekly or fortnightly sessions. Lessons focus on targeted learning for each section of the exam, with content tailored to your child’s strengths and areas for improvement. Weekly homework is provided and carefully marked with individual feedback.
3. Exam Preparation & Mock Testing
As the exam approaches, we’ll shift to timed mock exams under real testing conditions. Time management is one of the biggest challenges in these exams, and mock testing plays a crucial role in preparing students for the pressure. Each test is marked and reviewed in detail, just like the real exam.
Resources I Provide:
Please note that I do not expect you or your child to have any resources. I have my own personally produced resources, as well as those made by educational and tutoring companies which I will utilise. I have gathered these over several years of tutoring, and spent close to $5000 on them. The sad reality is that many large tutoring companies extort parents by making them pay for additional resources like mock examinations, on top of their already high lesson fees. With me, everything is included in the hourly fee.
Location: Ballarat region for in person. Often also in Geelong during the working day for university. Discounted lessons via zoom available.
Rates: I charge $60 an hour, with group classes being discounted dependent on the number of students. Discounted lessons via zoom available.
Additional tutoring/advice: On top of tutoring for the selective school exam, I am more than happy to help your child with any regular schoolwork they have. Additionally, as a medical student (and a tutor to many medical school applicants) I am more than happy to provide advice regarding the process and how to prepare for it.
Thank you for taking the time to read my post. For parents who are interested, I encourage you to reach out as soon as possible. Due to me commencing placements in medical school, I have a very limited number of spots available. Feel free ask for reviews, I can provide you with contact numbers of past students.
Best of luck, Nick.
