Hello! I'm a tutor based out of Corio, available to provide tutoring at my house or travel (within reason) to other parts of Geelong. I worked as a teaching assistant at the University of Queensland in the maths department for eight years, including as the supervising tutor for a large first-year course, and I was recruited to the National Maths Summer School staff based on my approach. I was at NMSS for five years, tutoring Year 11/12 students, and I've privately tutored younger high school students in the past. I'm a discrete mathematician at heart and did my Honours in graph theory/pure mathematics, but a lot of my tutoring experience was in first-year analysis and engineering maths courses, as well as first-year physics courses.
I'm an avid writer and have a lot of experience providing feedback for both creative and professional writing. While I don't have tertiary qualifications in English, my Bachelor's was in one of the more sociological sciences, and all of my essays were marked highly. I penned a variety of technical and non-technical articles and training resources for my last workplace, all of which were well-received and highly-regarded. (I also topped my English class in high school and won a writing competition when I was 12, but it's up to you whether you think either of those count.)
I love tutoring, and I've been told I have a contagious passion for the subjects I teach; one student even told me I'd personally inspired them to switch their major to mathematics and pursue a PhD in Bioinformatics! Like a fey creature, I am compelled to answer any question, including the facetious ones, and my teaching evaluations consistently ranked me as highly approachable and helpful (although I'll still make you work for it! You're meant to be learning, after all!)
I'm a strong believer in active learning and a growth mindset, and my goal is help my students make their own connections and think critically and creatively about their work. As well as helping with content, I'm more than happy to help students develop study skills and habits (as I wish someone had taught me before I got to uni!). I help my students pull apart the motivation behind assignments and see them as more than just busywork; I think it's important to know how the skills they learn will be relevant throughout their lives.
I don't use AI for teaching, as I think it's antithetical to the idea of learning. Any answers I give will be sourced from academic sources, textbooks and my own subject matter expertise and experience.
Ultimately, I consider it my role to build student's confidence, so there are no wrong questions, and there are cool stickers on the line if you impress me. (The tweens who consider themselves too cool for stickers can have a high-five or something until they're old enough to come back around.)
My forte is late high school and early university students, but I'm comfortable working with younger kids and mature age students. (Yes, the stickers are also on offer to mature age students. They're COOL stickers. I get them from markets and penpals, not Officeworks.)
