Native Mandarin speaker who teaches the way you actually learn
Sydney tutor in Mandarin
Hi, I'm Vanessa — a native Mandarin speaker currently doing my Master of Commerce (Data Analytics) at the University of Sydney. Before that I did
my undergrad partly in Australia and partly in China, so I've spent a lot of time thinking about language from both sides of the fence.
Chinese isn't just something I happen to speak — I was in an experimental class at a top school in Jiangsu Province throughout school, and Chinese Language & Literature was always my strongest subject. So beyond fluency, I actually understand why the language works the way it does, which makes it a lot easier to explain to someone learning it.
The teaching side I've built up in a couple of different ways. I taught my younger sister for a while, and instead of just repeating explanations at her, I paid attention to what she responded to and built lessons — with previews and reviews — around that. Her grades went up. Separately, I've spent a lot of time as a director in my university drama society, coaching new members one line, one expression, one movement at a time until it actually landed. Both taught me the same lesson: teaching isn't about repeating yourself louder, it's about noticing how the person in front of you actually learns and adjusting to that.
I'm currently offering online lessons in conversational and everyday Mandarin — happy to work with complete beginners or anyone wanting to build confidence speaking. Message me and let's figure out what you actually need.

Experience
I've taught in two different settings. As a director in my university drama society, I repeatedly coached new cast members one-on-one — breaking
down dialogue delivery, pronunciation, facial expression and stage movement, and going through it again and again until it clicked. Separately, I
taught my younger sister English and classical Chinese, tailoring lessons to her personality and what she responded to, and building in preview
and review sessions around each lesson — her grades improved as a result. Both experiences taught me the same thing: good teaching means reading
the person in front of you and adjusting to how they actually learn, not just repeating the same explanation.
Qualifications
Native Mandarin speaker with a strong personal foundation in the language — I studied in an experimental/gifted class at a well-regarded school
in Jiangsu Province throughout my schooling, and consistently ranked at the top of my class in Chinese Language & Literature (??). Currently
completing a Master of Commerce (Data Analytics) at the University of Sydney, with a Bachelor of Commerce from Curtin University. No formal
teaching certification (e.g. TCSOL) yet, but strong subject mastery and a track record of adapting my teaching style to the learner.
