I am an experienced English teacher and tutor offering individual tuition to secondary students, with a particular focus on Years 11 and 12 English.

My approach goes beyond helping students complete homework. I work with students to develop the skills that underpin strong English results: close reading, interpretation, clear argument, sophisticated textual analysis and confident essay writing.

A particular strength of my tuition is diagnosing why an essay is not receiving the marks a student expects. We can examine previous assessments and teacher feedback, identify recurring weaknesses, and develop practical strategies for improvement. My qualifications as a law graduate from UNSW, ANU and the University of Sydney, together with my 20 years’ practice as a lawyer, enable me to help students develop strong arguments in essay writing.

I also have a strong interest in literature and Shakespeare and particularly enjoy working with students who want to move beyond formulaic essay writing towards more perceptive and sophisticated responses to texts. In 2025, I was awarded the John Bell and Joyce Williams Prize “for outstanding achievement in a field related to Shakespeare studies” at the University of Sydney as part of a Master of English Studies degree.

Lessons are tailored to the individual student. Students are encouraged to bring their current texts, assessment notifications, previous essays and teacher feedback so that our work relates directly to what they are studying at school.

10 years’ full-time teaching English Years 7 to 12 at independent secondary schools in Sydney (Newington College, St Augustine’s College, Sydney Grammar School) and New York (Polytechnic Prep Country Day School);
Two years’ teaching undergraduate courses on Shakespeare and Modern Drama in the English Department at Macquarie University;
5 years’ tutoring English Years 7 to 12 in coaching colleges in Sydney.
