Hi! I’m Katherine, a secondary Mathematics tutor with three years of tutoring experience. I am currently completing a Master of Teaching (Secondary), specialising in Mathematics, in Melbourne. I also hold a Bachelor of Science in Management from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE).

I tutor secondary school Mathematics and particularly enjoy helping students who may understand procedures but struggle with the reasoning behind them. My approach is to break difficult concepts into manageable steps, identify gaps in understanding, and use different explanations, examples and visual representations until students find an approach that works for them.

Through my secondary school teaching placements in Victoria, I have experience planning and delivering Mathematics lessons, working with students of different ability levels, and adapting activities to individual learning needs. I am also familiar with the Victorian secondary Mathematics curriculum and understand the importance of balancing conceptual understanding with the skills students need for assessments.

Lessons are tailored to each student. Depending on their goals, we can work on current school topics, homework and difficult concepts, revise previous knowledge, prepare for assessments, or extend into more challenging questions. I can also provide additional practice questions and learning materials where appropriate.

Most importantly, I want students to feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes. Mathematics can become frustrating when small gaps in understanding accumulate, so I aim to create a patient and supportive environment where students can build both confidence and independence.

Experience

I have three years of tutoring experience, primarily supporting secondary school students in Mathematics. I have worked with students of different ability levels, helping them strengthen their understanding of key mathematical concepts, improve problem-solving skills, and build confidence in the subject.

My tutoring approach focuses on understanding rather than simply memorising procedures. I explain concepts step by step, use different examples and representations, and adjust the level of support according to each student’s needs. Through my secondary teaching placements in Melbourne, I have also gained experience working with students in classroom settings and supporting learners with diverse academic and language backgrounds.

I aim to create a supportive and encouraging learning environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, identifying areas of difficulty, and gradually becoming more independent learners.

Qualifications

I hold a Bachelor of Science in Management from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) and am currently completing a Master of Teaching (Secondary) in Melbourne, specialising in Mathematics.

As part of my teacher training, I have completed secondary school teaching placements in Victoria, where I have planned and delivered Mathematics lessons, developed differentiated learning activities, assessed student understanding, and provided individual support to students.

My academic and teaching background has provided me with strong mathematical, analytical and communication skills, as well as practical knowledge of the Victorian secondary school curriculum.
