I am a PhD-trained linguist and experienced university educator offering one-to-one tutoring in Linguistics, English Literature and academic writing, Mandarin, and Music Theory.
My main specialist area is linguistics. I have taught phonetics and phonology, sociolinguistics, morphology and syntax at university level, and can also provide more specialised support with IPA transcription, acoustic phonetics, Praat and linguistic research methods. I particularly enjoy helping students make sense of technical concepts and learn how to carry out linguistic analysis independently. I also have experience teaching Cambridge A Level Literature in English, Academic English and IELTS, and can support secondary and university students with close reading, literary analysis, essay planning, academic writing and exam preparation.
As a native Mandarin speaker with a background in linguistics, I can teach Mandarin with particular attention to pronunciation, grammar and how the language works. I have extensive experience teaching multilingual and international students, including students from China. I have also worked as a piano teacher, teaching weekly lessons and preparing students for ABRSM examinations, and can provide support with music theory and foundational musicianship. My teaching style is patient, structured and analytical. I adapt lessons to each student’s goals and focus on helping students understand the reasoning behind what they are learning, rather than simply memorising answers. Lessons can be tailored around university coursework, school assessments, exams, research projects or individual learning goals.
I currently offer online lessons and have limited availability for a small number of regular students.

Experience

I have several years of teaching experience across university linguistics, English and Literature, academic English, and music. I have taught phonetics and phonology, sociolinguistics, morphology and syntax, and have experience supporting both undergraduate and postgraduate students.
I previously taught Cambridge A Level Literature in English, Academic English and IELTS, and have extensive experience working with international and multilingual students, including students from China.
My tutoring style is clear, patient and analytical. I focus on helping students understand difficult concepts and develop the skills to work independently, rather than simply providing answers. I can support students with linguistics, phonetics and Praat, English Literature and academic writing, as well as music theory.

Qualifications

I hold a PhD in Linguistics from the University of Sydney, a Master of Arts by Research in Linguistics from Nanyang Technological University, and a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Linguistics with a minor in Chinese.
My specialist areas include phonetics, phonology, sociolinguistics, language contact, acoustic analysis and language documentation. I have taught university courses in phonetics and phonology, sociolinguistics, morphology and syntax, and have also worked as an English and Literature instructor.
I am a native speaker of Mandarin and Hokkien, with additional proficiency in Malay, Cantonese and French.
