Japanese conversation & culture for real-life situations

Ipswich tutor in Japanese

Hi, I’m Yuka, a native Japanese speaker from Tokyo. I offer relaxed one-to-one online sessions for adults who are learning Japanese and want to go beyond textbooks, or who want to understand Japanese culture and communication in real-life situations.

I studied Linguistics at the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo, where I also worked as a Japanese Language Lab Assistant supporting students learning Japanese. I now live in Australia. Having learned English as a second language and lived in Japan, the US and Australia, I’ve experienced first-hand how language and culture can shape everyday communication.

You might want to practise speaking more fluently, get more comfortable expressing your opinions in Japanese, discuss a topic you’re interested in, explore a cultural difference, or understand something that happened in a real conversation.

We can speak in Japanese, English or a mix of both, depending on your level and what you want to work on. No Japanese is needed if you’d like to focus on culture and communication.

You’re also welcome to bring a real situation or question, whether it involves a partner, family member, friend or colleague. If you’re wondering why something was said a certain way, how your words might come across, or how cultural differences may be affecting the conversation, we can explore it together.

Japanese communication can be shaped by context, tone, relationships and things that aren’t always said directly. Rather than giving you a single “Japanese people do this” answer, I’ll help you look at the context and consider different possibilities.

I’m also in an intercultural relationship myself, and we’re raising a child together, so navigating different ways of communicating is part of my everyday life too.

Each one-hour session includes 45 minutes of conversation followed by a short personalised written reflection, with themes I noticed and ideas you might explore or practise next.

Please note: This isn’t a grammar or exam preparation class. It’s designed to complement your existing lessons or self-study, with a focus on conversation, communication and culture.

I like to keep things relaxed and informal, so just come as you are. Pyjamas are absolutely fine!

If this sounds like what you’re looking for, send me a message and tell me a little about what you’d like to work on.

Experience

I worked as a Japanese Language Lab Assistant at the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo for approximately 1.5 years, supporting students from 3–4 Japanese language classes each semester. I helped students practise Japanese in person, answered questions and supported them with their language learning.

I have also provided occasional one-to-one Japanese tutoring in Australia and English tutoring in Japan.

Having lived in Japan, the US and Australia, I also bring first-hand experience of communicating across different languages and cultures. My sessions focus particularly on Japanese conversation, real-life communication and cultural context.
