Mrs Wardhani (or "Bu" as I call her) is a phenomenal tutor, and I do not say this lightly.
I had the absolute privilege of being her student for almost three years, starting from my
year 10 general Indonesian studies and continuing, most importantly, throughout my year
11 and year 12 IB Indonesian course at Carey Baptist Grammar School (IB is an
international finals course equivalent to VCE).
I cannot remember a single tutoring session that was unsatisfying or unhelpful. Without
exception, Bu Maria was always prepared for our sessions, bringing not only relevant and
helpful teaching material but also her massive smile, enthusiasm and inherently positive
personality. It was always obvious to me that she had a genuine desire to see my
Indonesian language flourish and, to that end, took an incredibly keen interest in my
studies. But it was not only my language which developed - our friendship did too and I
now consider Bu as one of my closest adult friends.
I ended up studying IB Indonesian at Higher Level, not Standard Level - this is quite a
rare decision for an Australian who has only studied the language since year 7. I was
initially told it would be very difficult because it involved complex literature and was also
geared more towards students of half or full Indonesian ethnicity who were, for example,
born in Australia, but whose parents were fluent in the language. Nevertheless, and quite
to my surprise, I ended up achieving a scaled total score of 98% in the subject. Bu Maria
was instrumental in helping me achieve this result. Our conversational sessions helped me
not only in my spoken Indonesian, but in all areas of the language. Bu even took it upon
herself to re-read and annotate an entire piece of Indonesian literature so that she was as
well equipped as possible to help me with the literary portion of my course.
In short, I can’t say enough positive things about Bu Maria. She deserves my full
recommendation. If you bring enthusiasm and a passion for Indonesian to her tutoring
sessions, she will help you immeasurably. |

I took Indonesia tutorials with Maria for approx. 4 months (in 2015) and she was a terrific
teacher: she has a great intuition and intelligence about pacing the lesson for the
student's level; she brought in appropriate materials and balanced the lessons between
learning new grammar patterns, vocabulary, and practising the language. You can tell she
a lot of experience working with language learners; she was always incredibly positive and
encouraging -- a real pleasure to work with.
I would recommend Maria for anyone wishing to learn Indonesian.
