🚨 NEW HSC ENGLISH SYLLABUS FOR 2027! IS YOUR TUTOR UP TO DATE?
YEARS 7–12 ENGLISH TUITION β€” START EARLY OR SHARPEN YOUR SKILLS FOR THE HSC!

The HSC English syllabus is changing, and high-achieving former students aren't necessarily familiar with the new requirements. The strategies that worked for their HSC may not be appropriate for yours.

Whether your child is starting Year 7 and building their foundations or entering Years 11–12 and preparing for the HSC, Hills English offers specialist tuition designed for their stage of learning.

Two pathways. One philosophy: teach the skills that make students genuinely better at English.

ABOUT AMANDA

I bring together:

10 years of classroom teaching β€” Years 7–12 English at a Hills District private school.

20 years of tutoring experience β€” From tutoring as a university student to running an established tutoring business.

HSC Trial examination marking experience β€” First-hand insight into how examination responses are assessed.

Professional curriculum and programme writing β€” Developing Years 7–12 course content for one of Australia's largest franchised coaching colleges, including practice OC and selective school examination papers.

After leaving classroom teaching to raise my three children, I continued working in education through curriculum development and tutoring. Now that my children are older, I'm returning to tutoring with a purpose-built programme at Hills English.

TWO PATHWAYS TO STRONGER ENGLISH

PATHWAY 1: START EARLY, BUILD STRONG FOUNDATIONS | YEARS 7–10

English is a cumulative subject. The ability to construct sophisticated arguments, interpret complex texts and write with precision develops through deliberate practice over time.

Starting early gives students the opportunity to build those skills progressively, rather than trying to develop them all at once.

Years 7–8: Establishing strong foundations in interpretation, analysis, creative writing, expression and deliberate writing choices.

Years 9–10: Developing increasingly sophisticated arguments, deeper textual analysis, purposeful evidence selection and greater control over written expression.

The advantage of starting early isn't simply being ahead for the next assessment. It's having the time to develop increasingly independent, confident and capable thinking and writing before the demands of senior English arrive.

PATHWAY 2: FOCUSED HSC PREPARATION | YEARS 11–12

Starting in senior school? Absolutely not too late.

Years 11 and 12 are an opportunity for targeted, intensive development of the skills that matter most in senior English.

Students don't need to have attended tutoring since Year 7 to benefit from specialist instruction. They need to understand what strong English performance requires, identify where their current skills fall short and practise improving them deliberately.

Hills English helps senior students refine analytical writing, develop sophisticated arguments, select and integrate evidence, respond to unfamiliar questions and communicate effectively under examination conditions.

Alongside weekly classes, HSC-focused intensive workshops allow students to concentrate on specific skills, techniques and examination demands.

Whether a student needs to strengthen their foundations, move from competent to sophisticated writing, or refine an already strong performance, there's meaningful work to be done.

WHY HILLS ENGLISH IS DIFFERENT

English isn't about memorising better answers. It's about learning how to produce your own.

Too much English tutoring revolves around prescribed texts, upcoming assessments and rehearsed responses.

My approach is different.

I teach English as a skills-based subject. Students learn how to interpret texts, develop arguments, analyse language, select evidence, structure ideas and communicate with clarity and confidence.

These skills are explicitly taught, modelled, practised and refined until students can apply them independently, regardless of the text, question or assessment in front of them.

The same underlying philosophy applies whether I'm teaching a Year 7 student how to construct their first analytical paragraph or a Year 12 student how to produce a sophisticated response under examination conditions.

WHY SMALL GROUPS?

Because English develops through discussion, interpretation and intellectual challenge, not simply individual correction.

Students benefit from hearing different perspectives, testing their ideas, defending arguments and discovering interpretations they might never have considered alone.

My classes are deliberately limited to 12 students, allowing for meaningful discussion, individual feedback and close attention to each student's progress.

WHAT HILLS ENGLISH DOES β€” AND DOESN'T β€” DO

I don't rewrite school assessments, reteach prescribed texts or provide answers to memorise.

I provide the specialist skills training that complements what students learn at school, building the analytical and writing abilities they need to tackle unfamiliar questions independently.

The goal isn't simply a better result on the next assessment.

It's a stronger, more capable English student who knows how to think, write and perform independently.

"Amanda tutored me throughout my Year 11–12 schooling, with a particular focus on analysis and precision in essay writing. Amanda helped me understand how to better articulate and execute my points, while removing the β€˜waffle’. She tailored her approach to my learning style and needs, while also holding me accountable when I got lazy. She was an excellent tutor, with the perfect mix of being personable but professional. I would definitely recommend her to anyone needing assistance with English in the 7–12 setting."
