At the start of Year 8 (in 2015), I got introduced to Ruth through a friend. We had weekly
lessons at her house in Sydney and she helped me improve my understanding of English
as well as helping me with my grammar, spelling, essay, and poetry writing. After a few
lessons, I was told at school about how my writing in class and assignments were
improving. Ruth also assisted me in writing and correcting my assignments, quickly raising
my grade from a mixture of Sounds and Highs to Outstandings in my report. Ruth’s vast
knowledge and understanding of the English curriculum, because of her past experience as
a teacher at a selective school, helps improve my understanding of English. From the start
of 2016, I have continued to have fortnightly lessons with Ruth over Skype which have
been working quite successfully, being just as valuable and effective. Ruth provides me
assistance in all my inquiries in all my school work. I very much enjoy my lessons with her
and look forward continue my lessons with her till the HSC. I highly recommend Ruth to
anyone needing help with English as she is an amazing teacher. |

In Year 9, I began having lessons with Ruth in Sydney, October 2015 with the need to
address my essay writing skills and improve my ability to write more concisely, especially
under time constraints. It was only after a few lessons that these issues drastically
improved and gaps of certain areas in my knowledge of English began to arise. Ruth
quickly addressed these issues and taught me how to plan my essays, collate and sort my
ideas according to the task, and write more efficiently under time pressure and exam
conditions. She immediately fixed the gaps in my knowledge and within 3 months my
grades improved drastically, from the mid B range, to the mid-high A range in all assessed
English tasks. Ruth’s extensive knowledge of the English curriculum and her ability to
succinctly communicate its requirements has allowed me to extend myself and vastly
improve each week. Since the beginning of 2016, I have continued weekly lessons with
Ruth over Skype which have been working very successfully and have been just as
valuable and effective as the previous face-to-face lessons. Ruth has assisted me in
establishing an extensive foundation in my skills and knowledge of essay writing, in-depth
text analysis, and responses to differing texts in preparation for the HSC courses in Years
11 and 12. When I have finished a task between lessons each week, Ruth efficiently
marks, returns, and discusses it with me, providing feedback through email or over the
phone. Ruth provides me with new ideas and alternate perspectives on my texts, allowing
my writing to develop and constantly improve. I throughly enjoy my lessons every week,
and I am looking forward continuing my lessons with Ruth during the HSC. Ruth is an
amazing teacher and I highly recommend her to anyone needing help with, or wanting to
be extended in English. |

I had two lessons a week with Ruth from before my HSC trials until my exams. I
was overwhelmed by my workload with Extension and Advanced English and had lost
my ability to write well under pressure as I felt I had too much to say and didn't
know how to express my ideas concisely and clearly.
Ruth helped me straight away and after just a few lessons I had outstanding trial
results in English. She taught me how to plan essays and gather my ideas according
to the requirements of the syllabus and rubric. What seemed so overwhelming and
impossible then became quite straightforward.
We also went over some of the details from my texts and Ruth gave me new ideas
and filled in gaps left by my teachers. Her knowledge is extensive and she always
had really interesting ideas about the texts. I found her lessons really stimulating
and I learned new things each time.
I worked very hard with Ruth and she had high expectations of me. I learned to
write quickly under pressure and how to gather key ideas and quotes and then adapt
them according to the question in the exam. She always had extra time for me and
marked my work and returned it to me and spoke on the phone when I was really
struggling.
I achieved Band 6 for both Extension and Advanced and could never have done this
without the guidance of such a good teacher. Ruth was always able to explain things
in a way which made sense to me and then gave me room for my own ideas and
perspectives. She is an awesome teacher and I highly recommend her, my only
regret is that I didn't have her from the beginning of Year 11. |

I came to Ruth towards the end of Year 11 for help with Advanced English. I was
falling behind with my marks and under-performing even though I had always been
strong in this subject. After an initial assessment Ruth easily identified what the issue
with my English was and put together a plan that would help me. I had to follow key
focus points with my writing and learn to use the criteria and rubric that the Board of
Studies identifies. I made progress extremely quickly and was back in the top ten
ranking for assessments in just a few weeks. By the end of Year 11 my confidence
had increased and Ruth began work with me to achieve a Band 6 - which I did! As a
tutor Ruth always seemed to know what I needed to do next and knew the English
curriculum and texts back to front. She was brilliant with recommendations for
related texts and was always able to frame ideas and essay approaches in a way
that suited me. I needed a tutor to provide me with a method and means of
performing as highly as possible in English so my score for University could be as
high as possible. I am now at Sydney University studying to be a vet. I would highly
recommend her as a tutor. |

I have had Ruth as my tutor intermittently within 5 years from Year 8 (2011) to Year 12 (2015). One of the many reasons I have stuck with Ruth was due to her exceptionally extensive knowledge of handling English language to help with writing narratives and persuasive essays, interpreting literature for comprehension and approaching exams. Ruth is unique in that she has gone beyond the curriculum with whatever English help I have come to her for throughout the years, and has gone to the root of the syllabus requirements to explain their rationale so that I understand what I am truly addressing and how to approach each topic as required. Much of my problem before visiting Ruth was I was having difficulty realising and understanding the issues needing to be discussed within the various English topics I came to her with and this contributed to my difficulty in handling the English work from school. Over the years Ruth has given me a more rounded and mature insight in tackling my essays, narratives and exam questions to go beyond the standard requirements for school. In my senior years, particularly my HSC year where I took Advanced English, Ruth only exercised these abilities more thoroughly as we worked together to approach each assessment and exam as they came, giving each piece of work ample consideration when needed. She was patient with my misunderstandings and gave me space to come up with the answers myself as she helped. This also allowed me to not lag behind in my work and stay organised throughout the year. Only with Ruth's help I was able to gain a Band 6 in Advanced English with a mark of 91 in HSC 2015. I would gladly recommend her to anyone needing help with English. |

When I came to Ruth I was unhappy with my English marks and unsure if I could improve
them as I thought I was just more of a social sciences student and would always struggle
with English. Ruth was very flexible in fitting me in for weekly lessons as well as some
extras during the weeks leading up to trials, other exams and HSC. I definitely felt myself
improving throughout the year and after a couple of months I was getting an A average in
English and had improved considerably in my weakest areas. Ruth knew all the concepts
in great depth and was always able to clearly explain them to me. It was also great having
a perspective other than my teacher’s, which gave me more ideas to write about in
essays. Having lessons with Ruth kept me on track and at typically stressful times I didn’t
have as much to do because Ruth had already had me make drafts that she corrected and
marked with suggestions on where to improve. Despite having a busy year, I looked
forward to my weekly lessons with Ruth who was always very supportive and patient with
me. I’m certain that without her help I wouldn’t have done this well, winding up with a 92
from Advanced English. |

Prior to getting Ruth's help in English, I was performing well, yet still struggled in
some areas, particularly in the creative writing section of the Area of Study. Where I
had previously been receiving low B-band grades in my creative writing, I was able
to attain a mark of 14/15 in my final exams.
Ruth very clearly communicates her ideas, and helps in elucidating difficult tasks,
and complex thoughts, so that they can be easily digested. Additionally, she is very
dedicated in providing feedback on submitted work; making detailed margin notes,
and is often willing to take phone calls to discuss work as well. Moreover, Ruth
encourages her students to convey any problems or thoughts that they have had
between her lessons, and subsequently structures her lessons to address these
problems.
Ruth's help was thus very significant in enabling me to achieve a mark of 94 in
Advanced English. |

Our English teacher in Year 12 was not very helpful, and my English marks began to
drop, as well as my confidence in the subject. During the months leading up to the HSC,
I saw Ruth several times where she greatly expanded my knowledge and understanding
of all the three modules and the area of study. Ruth clearly knows the course back-to-
front and communicates ideas and concepts in a way that was very understandable,
something my English teacher at school could not do. Before tutoring with Ruth, I was
achieving marks of 60's and 70's, but afterwards, I ranked second in the year for
English during trials and achieved a mark of 85 in the HSC. All of this was largely due to
Ruth's fantastic help/ |

I couldn't have gotten through Advanced English without Ruth's help, she tutored me for
a year and the improvements I made were immense. I came out of the HSC with very
pleasing results in english which were capable only with hard work and encouragement
from Ruth. |

Ruth was a very helpful tutor for me in my first semester of Year 12. I was able to work with her to
target my weaker areas in English and she would be most efficient in finding the right way to do so.
Whilst being tutored by Ruth,I primarily focused on the Area of Study Unit- (Belonging) as this was what
corresponded to what i was learning at school at the time. She was most helpful in helping develop my
understanding of the concept, while also helping me to find relevant related text material. As I am not a
keen and big reader, she was able to find texts that most suited my learning abilities (such as using a
poem and a short story, as opposed to using a full novel).
At each session, Ruth would have prepared notes on a section we were to work on (previously chosen
the week before) so the session would run effectively. In the lead up to assessment tasks, Ruth would
be willing to spend time on the phone, giving me any extra advice I needed.
Before having Ruth as a tutor, I was a high B-grade student, and I have come out of the HSC as a solid
A-grade student, receiving a Band 6 in Advanced English in the 2011 HSC. |

I had lessons with Ruth each week during year 12. I was getting in the C range for advanced english before I had come to her. Ruth helped me with my assessment tasks and prepared me for all my exams. I was consistantly getting in the B range throughout year 12. For the final HSC advanced english result I got 80, which sat in band 5 (the second top band). For the courses I want to do at Uni, I had to do advanced english and get above a band 4. Ruth prepared activities and work sheets for me to do either during the lesson or at home. She typed up many notes for me, and helped me a lot with my essay writing. Ruth knew I was a visual learner, so whenever she could she would draw diagrams and pictures to help me understand either the texts or what an assessment task was asking me to do. Ruth made me 'to-do lists' each week so that I was on top of everything. We also had phone calls during the week so that she could go over essays that I had sent her to mark. Ruth was a great tutor, and I only got such a good mark because of all her work. |
