Tara has been nothing short of amazing in supporting both my 8 year old daughter with her spelling and literacy, and me as a parent.
She has an incredible ability to make learning click using evidence-based teaching strategies that are engaging, practical, and effective. Just as importantly, she explains why some aspects of reading and spelling are challenging in a way that normalises different learning styles and gives children (and parents) the confidence to keep going.
The progress my daughter has made has been remarkable, and I’ve also learned so much about how to support her at home. I can’t recommend Tara highly enough. Every child deserves a teacher like Tara. |

I brought my 7 year old to Tara for reading intervention when she wasn’t organically gaining confidence with her reading across her early years (P-2). Tara’s extensive knowledge across many different pedagogical approaches combined with her natural ability to connect with kids was the perfect teaching combination. My daughter is now confidently reading to learn (as opposed to learning to decode/read) and has found her passion for reading. Tara has been a transformative influence on our family and my children’s education.
She didn’t just teach my children phonics and spelling — she instilled in them perseverance, humility, and the invaluable lesson that mistakes are part of the learning process. Through her guidance, they developed grit, a strong work ethic, and a clear understanding of what success looks like.
In just seven months, Tara made remarkable progress in improving both the spelling and reading abilities of my children, who each face learning challenges, including ADD, ADHD, dyslexia, and dysgraphia. Her ability to tailor her approach and build confidence is truly exceptional.
It’s important to note that Tara’s program requires a real commitment. Not just from the child, but from the whole family. Sessions require an adult to attend with the child, and there’s a need for 3–4 practice sessions at home each week. But the effort is absolutely worth it. Watching our children grow in skill and confidence was incredibly rewarding.

Having Tara be my daughters tutor is the best decision we have ever made in our daughter's both self-confidence and academic learnings. There are so many positive words that I can say about Tara, a few being, caring, understanding, patient, and most importantly willingness to see her students grow in their own time. Tara last year focused on English with our daughter, and we witnessed a significant increase in her academia of writing and spelling. This year Tara has focused on mathematics, with our daughters gradings moving up two notches (in two terms), which is all thanks to Tara and this was even commended by our daughter's teacher in her report card. I’m not sure what I would have done without Tara! Our journey started in 2020 when my daughter was diagnosed with dyslexia. We did see another tutor initially, but it wasn’t until we started seeing Tara that I realised what a difference evidence-based literacy instruction could make. So when I saw my son struggle through Prep I didn’t hesitate in booking him in to see Tara. When we began, he was having difficulty sounding out 3 letter words, now after 2 years with Tara he is reading and spelling so confidently and accurately and thriving at school. In this time as he caught up with his peers in reading, Tara focus turned to maths and writing, finding and filling the gaps in his learning. Both of my children have loved seeing Tara each week, she has been patient, kind and fun, but also firm when needed to ensure we get the most out of each session. |

Tara has been seeing Xander since Sept 2020. Xander has been diagnosed with Dyslexia and when we started seeing Tara Xander barely knew his letters. After 2 years he has come along in leaps and bounds and is making great progress with his reading. Tara has amazing patience, learning techniques and knowledge to enable Xander to gain confidence and be successful with his reading. My son (grade 5) has executive functioning issues around processing and recall and had been struggling with maths for sometime. When exploring options to assist him, I had been told that tutors would not necessarily help him, because while tutors understand the curriculum, they may not know how to best teach the person and their specific needs. A friend recommended me to Tara, highlighting how Tara focussed on understanding how her clients (children) learn and working that into her sessions.
My son has been working with Tara for 6 months: and the results have been exceptional. Tara has helped my son revisit fundamental concepts and processes in maths that he was lagging in. She has helped him learn and recall times tables, which he really struggled with. He is now able to recall and complete division and multiplicaiton processes with confidence, tell time, work with fractions, angles and shapes. Most importantly, Tara has successfully worked with him by understanding how he learns, processes and recalls information. She also helps him with his mindset and provides support and advice for him to help himself when in the classroom. I would highly recommend Tara to any family considering specialised, thoughtful and insightful tutoring aimed at helping children with more than just the current curriculum in the classroom; she works on that but also finds out where the gaps are first. A+ ;) |

We started a journey a long time ago with our daughter trying different things to help her with her reading and spelling. Missing small words while reading (and, the, there, are) and skipping lines. Fluency was diffcuilt. Unsure as parents what the next steps would be. We found Tara via Speld - and how lucky we were. Our daughter in a year went up 2 years with her reading age and 1 year in her spelling. Tara has been able to quickly identify gaps in my child's abilities and apply a method specific to his learning style that has increased his skills and confidence exponentially in the six months we have been meeting. He has increased his reading level the equivalent of two years at school in that time. Our daughter's school was struggling to work out how to teach and assess her in a "meaningful way". I contacted SPELD who introduced me to this tutor, Tara Johnston. I have thanked the universe ever since and consider our family to be blessed to have Tara on our team. Our daughter (ASD level 2 with Language Processing Developmental Delay), is flourishing and thriving under Tara's tutelage. On days when she was struggling, and I would have given up, Tara proceeds to engage our daughter with joy and curiosity, and successfully completes quality learning sessions. I am so thankful for the time Tara spent working with my son. Not just for the improvement showed in his maths, but for the confidence gained through realising that he is not broken, just learns differently from others. If you think your son or daughter needs help don't wait until it's too late. Come and see Tara. She is fabulous. Her programs are individualised to meet your childs specific needs. Tara's lessons are one-on-one, no group lesson. My kids love coming to Tara and actually look forward to their lesson with her. She makes every minute enjoyable. My kids have learnt great techniques, rhymes and tricks they are using everyday. They have improved immensely. My daughter has gone up 2 reading years in 6 months! Tara has the ability to engage the most reluctant of students. This is in part due to her ability to read a situation and vary her approach and lesson plan according to the 'mood of the room'. Tara's combination of qualifications to assist children academically as well as emotionally, means she's the most intuitive of tutors. My child has gained confidence, and while is never going to love being in a classroom all day, has found pride in his work and has done really well at school this year. If you've got a niggling worry in the back of your mind about your child's progress at school, and wondering whether to give tutoring a go, or wait and see, just go for it. Tara will be honest about whether she can help. |

Tara is fantastic. We wish we would have trusted our gut and sought her out earlier rather than listen to our school who encouraged us to "wait and see". The earlier you give your kids the tools to overcome their spelling challenges the better. Our daughter has made rapid improvement since beginning to see Tara. |

My daughter Hannah was diagnosed with dyscalculia in Grade 3. This really knocked her confidence and called herself "stupid". I went onto the SPELD website to request a tutor. Tara called me and sees Hannah twice a week. Tara has been the best tutor for Hannah. She is kind, passionate, clever, patient. I would recommend Tara to anyone struggling in school in general. I cannot rate Tara high enough. |

Tara makes learning fun. She is always prepared and her lesson is always specific to my children needs (no group learning). We saw an immediate improvement, after the first week, in my sons spelling and understanding of how to spell words. Each week his confidence has increased thanks to Tara. The way she explains everything to the kids is so easy for them to understand. My kids love Tara and look forward to seeing her each week. I am so glad we found her and the improvement she is making in my kids is so amazing. |
